The humdrum existence of an office worker mired in an unchallenging nine-to-five job is humorously depicted in this spec ad for Monster.com. The spot opens on a man whiling away the time in his workspace cubicle. Droning office chatter can be heard in the background.
At his drab workstation, our protagonist continues to sit and stare at some papers he’s holding. He uses the metal spoon from his coffee mug to scratch his nose idly, which gives him a bright idea. The man examines the spoon with a strange look in his eye, then glances around to make sure no one is watching. Satisfied that the coast is clear, he brings the spoon closer to his face and starts to push its handle up his nose. He tilts his head back and carefully maneuvers the spoon until its handle disappears completely into his left nostril.
A voiceover sums up the situation: "Bored at work?" The spot concludes with the Monster.com logo, accompanied by a super that reads, "Over 1,000,000 new job postings."
This offbeat promotion for the Monster.com Web site for career counseling and employment opportunities was conceived by Joe Leih, who also directed and edited the spec piece. Leih has created a directorial reel consisting of different spec commercials, including "Bored," in order to advance his own helming career.
Leih’s support team included producer Diana Gonzalez and production manager Ginger Myers. The commercial was shot on location in New York by Seamus Tierney. Production designer was Robin Siegel.
Online editor was David Donovan of The Tapehouse, New York. Scot Olive and Josh Olive of The Tapehouse were colorist and assistant colorist, respectively. Tom Lino of FlickerLab, New York, served as audio mixer/sound designer.
