Blue Visual Effects, Philadelphia, has added executive producer Sue Redmond and Avid editor Paula Martino. The visual effects boutique, started by motion graphics designer/editor Howard McCabe in ’97, is also moving out of the offices of Philadelphia production/post company Center City Film & Video (CCFV). (McCabe had an arrangement with CCFV whereby CCFV provided support services and hardware and McCabe acted as Flint creative director under his company banner Blue Visual Effects.) The two companies will retain an ongoing relationship, collaborating on projects on an as-needed basis.
Redmond-who will also serve as COO/partner-most recently worked at Center Film & Video as executive producer/marketing director. Previously the pair worked together at Criterion Communications, Philadelphia, where McCabe was VP and Redmond was VP/marketing and sales. This is also where they met Martino, who had moved to Philadelphia from New York in ’97. Martino’s previous positions were at New York editorial houses Crew Cuts and Vito DeSario Editing (now Version2. Editing). She worked on spots for national advertisers including Burger King via J. Walter Thompson, New York, and L’Oreal via McCann-Erickson, New York. Also working at Blue Visual Effects is Flame/After Effects broadcast designer Asuka Otake, who joined the company a year ago.
Commenting on her decision to partner with McCabe, Redmond said she had noticed an increased demand for spots utilizing high-end motion graphics and so decided to capitalize on it by carving out a niche in the Philadelphia market. "I am very excited about having a stake in my own company, and look forward to bringing a fresh approach to broadcast graphics design," said Redmond.
In addition to the broadcast motion graphic design, effects and animation executed on Flame, Blue Visual Effects will also offer online nonlinear uncompressed video editing on a high definition-capable Smoke, which has dynamic color correction and multiple DVEs/layers; and uncompressed nonlinear editing on an NT Avid Meridian dual stream system.
Blue’s current projects include a station ID graphics package for cable operator Comcast; editing on a national campaign for The Weather Channel via Red Tettemer, Narberth, Pa., and partnering with Center City Film & Video to co-produce the 2000 broadcast campaign for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team out of Philadelphia agency Goose.
