This spot thrusts us inside a city council meeting. The public session is deadly dull, with officials considering several numbered motions–what these motions are is anybody’s guess. This slice of life presenting our government in action–or more accurately in the throes of inaction–is captured in local TV news coverage-style.
But in the midst of this uninteresting scenario, a curious element emerges. A young guy pops up from behind the chair of one of the seated council members. The guy who’s committed “governmentus interruptus” then speaks into a nearby microphone, asking the council to pass motion number 30 because it’s his favorite.
A voiceover relates, “There’s an easier way to get inside local politics: The Las Vegas Review Journal. Get inside.”
“Politics” is one of three :30s in a campaign for the Las Vegas Review Journal directed by Kranky (a.k.a. Larry Shanet) of Shooters International, Toronto, for DRGM Advertising, Las Vegas. (Shooters represents Kranky worldwide.) The other two :30s show, respectively, a male sports fan joining a manager and pitcher on the baseball diamond for a conference on the mound, and a housewife-type breaking into a topless chorus line of Vegas showgirls. The ads position the Las Vegas Review Journal as a much easier way to get inside the worlds of sports and entertainment in Vegas.
Peter Benson executive produced for Shooters, with Matthew Wilkinson serving as line producer. Andy Nancarrow was the DP.
The DRGM creative team included VP/creative director Bernice Bamburak, associate creative director/art director Mike Disbennett, copywriter Brett Endelman and producer Amanda Lofink.
Editor was Nick Lofting of Union Editorial, Santa Monica. Audio post mixer was Josh Eichenbaum at Union Editorial.
The principal actors in “Politics” were David Schneider, Rory Reid, Myrna Williams and Bruce Woodbury.
