Arnold Communications had to bring a truck to New York’s Town Hall Theatre to haul its spoils back to Boston. Arnold won the $50,000 GRANDY for its three-spot Volkswagen of America campaign-"Dream," "Flower" and "UFO"-at the 35th annual International ANDY Awards sponsored by The Advertising Club of New York on April 29.
Other big winners in the television category were Cliff Freeman And Partners, New York, for its outrageous Outpost.com spots and Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, Ore., for its work for Miller Brewing Company.
This year’s ANDY chairman Rick Boyko, president and chief creative officer at Ogilvy & Mather, New York, hosted the awards show. Boyko expressed to the audience that it was the toughest set of judges he’d ever seen together in one room and lightheartedly added that he sometimes felt more like a ringmaster than a chairman. Consequently, there were 16 ANDYs handed out compared to last year’s 26, including the GRANDY, but as Boyko put it, "If you’re going to be judged at all, then be judged by the very best."
Volkswagen’s "Dream," "Flower" and "UFO"-which also took the best Automotive TV category-were helmed by Nick Lewin who at the time was with bicoastal Manifesto. (He has since joined bicoastal X-1 Films.) Additionally, Arnold won an ANDY for Volkswagen’s "Dawg" directed by Johan Camitz of bicoastal Satellite.
Two German agencies also won in the automotive category: Springer & Jacoby, Hamburg, for Mercedes-Benz of Europe’s "Silence" directed by Fabrice Carazo of Markenfilm, Hamburg; and Publicis Werbeagentur, Frankfurt, for Deutsche Renault’s "Rhinoceros," directed by Martin Schmid from JO!Schmid Filmproduktion, Hamburg.
In the Beverage/Alcohol portion of the competition, Wieden & Kennedy, Portland’s campaign for Miller Brewing Company and San Francisco-based Goodby, Silverstein & Partners’ work for Budweiser dominated. Miller High Life spots, "Bounty" and "Mayonnaise," each won a single ANDY via Wieden & Kennedy, directed by Errol Morris of bicoastal/ international @radical.media, while "Boat," "Mayonnaise" and "Router," also directed by Morris, won an ANDY for best campaign. Budweiser’s "Scolding the Ferret" out of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and directed by the agency’s Tom Routson (who has since joined Tool of North America, Santa Monica), took a single.
San Francisco-based Goldberg Moser O’Neill garnered an ANDY in the Leisure/Travel category for an Ameristar Casino spot entitled "Manson." The ad opens on real footage of Charles Manson delivering his very strange personal views to a parole board. It is obvious that no one in their right mind is going to let this guy out of jail and the words "No Chance" pop up to illustrate the point. Cut to a shot of the Ameristar Casinos logo and the tag, "Chance," appears in simple white type against a black screen. The production company was Maiden Lane Productions, San Francisco, and the title design was created by Fuel, Santa Monica. No director was employed.
The award for best Public Service Announcement was given to El Segundo, Calif.-based Team One Advertising for "Surfing Monkey" directed by Kyle Bergersen of Santa Monica-based November Films. The Partnership For a Drug Free America ad opens on a home shopping network selling an ugly, porcelain surfing monkey piggy bank. A consumer, who has just purchased 15 of them for $19.95 apiece calls in, but is unable to speak coherently because he is obviously stoned out of his mind. The ad is tagged, "Marijuana. A very expensive habit."
The infamous Outpost.com spots "Cannon," "Band" and "Forehead" directed by John O’Hagan of Hungry Man, New York, for Cliff Freeman And Partners, New York, won for best campaign in the Business Products & Services category. "Cannon" also earned a single for best spot in the same category.
Goodby Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, won best campaign in the packaged food category for Cracker Jack’s "Fall," "Sizes" and "Search," directed by bicoastal Headquarters’ Joe Public, while "Sizes" took a single in the same category. And for best retail food spot, Dunkin’ Donuts’ "Chase," created by Hill, Holiday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Boston, and directed by Shelter Films’ Jonathan David, won an ANDY.
