1) Have a unique point of view. If you aren’t sure if you do, pull up one of your spots right now. Is someone holding sparklers or standing on bike pegs? Unless one of those things is going to unexpectedly combust, try again. Make your work reflect you. Not that other commercial or other director. Make it undeniable amongst a wall of spots which one is yours. Compel people to hear your voice and see the world your way.
2) My advice to up-and-coming producers is YES. Do it. It’s an amazing career. You get to work with the best of all sides of the business – artists whose visions you help articulate. Agency creatives and clients whose dreams you help realize. Crew whose incredible amounts of skill (and patience) you witness first hand. Everyone aspires to direct, but there is so much satisfaction in the problem solving and creative fulfillment that comes from producing.
