Finalists for the 2013 AICE Awards have been selected by the judges, with the winners to be announced and honored during a gala ceremony on May 16 at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago.
Also during that evening affair, Jack Tohtz–a founding father of the venerable Szabo Tohtz and a key pioneering force in the Chicago Association of Film Editors, the predecessor Windy City organization to the Association of Independent Creative Editors–will be inducted into the AICE Hall of Fame. Tohtz’s accomplishments included helping to draft what became the AICE editorial bid form. (For more on Tohtz, see SHOOT, 4/19.)
The 2013 AICE Awards competition will feature a new category this year, Broadcast Promotion. Honorees in this category must demonstrate exceptional use of editorial, sound and graphic design techniques to promote a national broadcast or cable network, dramatic or reality series, co-branded initiative, stunt, marathon, sporting event, sweepstakes or feature film intended for broadcast television. The artist’s work must succeed in leaving the viewers with a clear, well-defined message and do so in an artistic and visually memorable way.
The rest of the AICE Award categories remain intact from last year.
The nominees in the inaugural Broadcast Promotion category are: editors Jake Jacobsen of Crew Cuts for Time Warner Cable’s “Clean Up” out of Ogilvy & Mather, Brandon Beck of Northern Lights for USA Network’s “Michael’s Tips,” and George Carty, also of Northern Lights, for USA Network’s “Nasty Boys.”
Finalist tally
Beast led the way with eight AICE nominations, generated by its New York, Detroit and San Francisco offices. Editors Stewart Shevin of Beast Detroit, and Doug Walker and Brian Lagerhausen of Beast San Francisco, accounted for two noms each. The Stewart-edited “Protect Yourself” for Durex scored finalists in the Spec Spot and Best of Detroit categories. Walker cut Mini Cooper’s “Win Small” for agency Butler Shine Stern & Partners–the spot earned noms in the Montage and Best of San Francisco categories. Lagerhausen of Beast S.F. garnered a finalist both in the Comedy and Best of S.F. categories for Clorox’s “Double Impact” out of DDB. Also copping a Best of San Francisco nomination was Beast S.F.’s Connor McDonald for General Motors’ “Scenes” via Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. And editor Amanda Moreau of Beast NY registered in the Regional Campaign category for Duke Energy Corp.’s “Family Reunion,” “Basketball” and “First Day” from Capstrat.
Next in the nominations tally with six was Cut+Run L.A. as editors Steve Gandolfi, Eve Ashwell and Jay Nelson had two finalists apiece–Gandolfi for Audi of North America’s “Prom” out of Venables Bell & Partners, Ashwell for Renault’s “Life in Four Years” out of Publicis, and Nelson for Grey Poupon’s “The Chase” from Crispin Porter+Bogusky. Both “Prom” and “Life in Four Years” scored in the Automotive and Storytelling categories. “The Chase” caught recognition in the Dialogue and Best of L.A. categories.
Five shops tied with four nominations apiece–The Whitehouse; MacKenzie Cutler, NY; jumP in L.A. and NY; Rooster, Toronto; and EditBar, Boston.
Adam Marshall and Shane Reid of The Whitehouse earned finalists in the Automotive and Best of L.A. categories for Lincoln’s “Journey” out of Hudson Rouge. The White House’s Russell Icke got a Montage category finalist for Powerade’s “Power Through” from Wieden+Kennedy. And editor Gareth McEwen of The Whitehouse nabbed a Public Service nom for RED’s “Tears” via Hill Holliday.
MacKenzie Cutler’s Ian MacKenzie cut ESPN Brand’s “Born Into It” for Wieden+Kennedy, a spot that scored in the Dialogue and Best of NY categories while MacKenzie’s colleague Erik Laroi garnered a coveted National Campaign finalist for DirecTV’s “Dinner Party,” “Funeral” and “Pizzeria” out of Grey, and a Visual Effects nom for Old Spice’s “Muscle Music” from Wieden+Kennedy.
Editor Luis Moreno accounted for three of jumP’s noms–one in the Fashion/Beauty category for H&M’s “Alter Ego” via Strange Cargo; and two Music Video finalists, Rolling Stone’s “Doom & Gloom” and Maroon 5’s “Daylight.” Editor Richard Cooperman of jumP registered in the Alternative Media category for Lexus’ “Anything But Gray” for Team One.
Rooster’s quartet of nominees consisted of three for editor Marc Langley–Molson Canadian’s “The Canadians” for Rethink in the Alternative Media category, Molson Coors’ “Experience” out of Draftfcb in the Montage category, and Tropicana’s “Good Morning, Morning” via Juniper Park in the Best of Toronto category–and a Dave De Carlo-cut nom entry for Puma’s “The Road” in the Spec category.
And EditBar’s nominations foursome included three for Best of Boston–Peter Barstis cut Saucony’s “Pat Watterson” for Mechanica, and Michael Reuter edited the Center for Disease Control’s “Beurger’s Tips” out of Arnold Worldwide and Jack Daniel’s “The Whiskey Drum,” also for Arnold. “The Whiskey Drum” also was a finalist in the Alternative Media category.
Three shops had three finalists each: Final Cut, Channel Z and Relish–with Tendril Animation+Design scoring two or three noms depending on one’s interpretation.
Channel Z’s nominations threesome came in the Best of Minneapolis category: editor Brett Astor for GAP’s “GAP Holiday Anthem” out of PMH; the Jim Stanger-cut “Tina Conversations” for Medifast via Solve Minneapolis; and the Mike Weldon-edited Majestic Athletics’ “Wear Your Hero” from agency Periscope.
Final Cut’s three finalists were: editor Jeff Buchanan in the Fashion/Beauty category for Target’s “Color Changes Everything” out of Wieden+Kennedy; editor Sonejuhi Sinha in the Public Service category for Nanhi Kali’s “The Girl Epidemic” for Strawberry Frog; and editor Jacob Kuehl (who has since joined Cutters), also in Public Service, for the Be Proud Foundation’s “Versus” out of agency Phenomenon.
Relish’s trio of finalists came on the strength of work cut by Chris Murphy: Toronto Transit Commission’s package of three “Protecting What Matters” spots out of Aircastle in the Regional Campaign category; and Style Frames Design Conference’s “Style Frames NY-Opening Titles” and the interactive short Carly’s Cafe for agency john st., both in the Best of Toronto category.
The Style Frames’ project also gained Tendril Animation+Design a mention in the same Best of Toronto category (though Relish was the actual nominated company there) as well as an outright nomination in the Visual Effects Category. Additionally, Tendril scored a Design nomination for Nike’s “CTR360.”
Scoring two finalists each were: Northern Lights for the aforementioned USA Network’s “Nasty Boys” cut by George Carty and “Michael’s Tips” edited by Brandon Beck in the Broadcast Promo category; Arcade Edit for National Campaign–eBay’s “Frenzy,” “Bad Dog” and “New Baby” cut by Geoff Hounsell for Venables Bell & Partners–and in the Dialogue category for Nike’s “Voices” edited by Paul Martinez for Wieden+Kennedy; P.S. 260 in the National and Regional Campaign categories for, respectively, the JJ Lask Cut Google :60s “Curious,” Aquarium” and “Camping” via Mullen and Google, and the Maury Loeb-cut BMW spots “Married,” “Tickets” and “Foot Taller” for KBS+P; Cosmo Street for the Tom Scherma-cut ESPN’s “Last Spot” for Wieden+Kennedy in the Comedy category, and the Paul Hardcastle-edited Nike’s “Game On, World” for Wieden+Kennedy in the Best of L.A. category; Blue Rock in the Spec Spot category for the Olivier Wicki-cut “Your Fight Matters” for TapouT, and in the Under $50,000 category for the Dave Otte-edited “Macy’s “INC Montage”; Married To Giants for two Graham Chisholm-cut pieces–Bikes on Wheels “Be Mighty” via Counsul Media in the Under $50,000 category, and Heart & Stroke Foundation’s “The Undeading” in the Best of Toronto category; ANATOMY in the Alternative Media category for the Discovery Channel piece “North America First Look” and in the Best of NY category for National Geographic Channels’ “This Is Nat Geo Brand Film,” both cut by Mark Valentine; Hudson Editorial with editor Louis Lyne’s “What Moves Me” for General Motors out of agency Commonwealth, and the Erich Wiemer-cut Jeep spot “Jeep What Matters” for GlobalHue, both scoring in the Best of Detroit category; Reel FX for Kevin Althans in Design for Patina Floor Design Store’s “One of a Kind” out of JRS Advertising, and for editor Quan Tran in Best of Dallas on the strength of Volunteers of America’s “Stats” from The Richards Group; The Mill in Color Grading for colorist Fergus McCall on Hennessy’s “Manny” for Droga5 and colorist Damien Van Der Cruyssen for Calvin Klein’s “Encounter”; One Union Recording in the Audio Mix category for mixer Joaby Deal on Logitech’s “El General” and “Truce” for agency DOJO; and 740 Sound Design+Mix in the Sound Design category for Adidas’ Wakeup” out of 180LA and Audi’s “Suspect” from Venables Bell & Partners, both with Eddie Kim and Rommel Molina as sound designers.
