With the theme of “getting plugged into the future,” SHOOT‘s two-pronged event–a daytime Directors/Producers Forum, and the evening’s 9th annual New Directors Showcase on Tuesday, May 10, at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Theatre in New York City–is starting to take shape.
The Showcase will provide attendees a look-see at and the opportunity to meet some of the best up-and-coming directors who based on their initial work show promise to make positive contributions to advertising and/or entertainment in its traditional and hybrid forms. Having your finger on the talent pulse of the business is a perennial must to stay plugged into the present and future of our industry.
Similarly, SHOOT‘s daytime Directors/Producers Forum offers a leg up on the future through speakers and panel discussions that offer insights into where the industry is headed creatively and from a business standpoint.
SHOOT is proud to be a Sponsor for the second year of Creative Week NYC and is pleased to present the SHOOT Directors/Producers Forum & New Directors Showcase as a part of Creative Week NYC’s weeklong series of events.
Here’s a preview Of our May 10th daytime and evening Agendas where learning, the latest trends and networking will take center stage.
First, here’s an overview of the agenda for the Directors/Producers Forum which will feature three panel discussions and a couple of one-on-one sessions, including one with a noted multi-disciplinary filmmaker. Lunch will also be served, offering an informal networking opportunity. The sessions include:
o Entering Another Dimension
While 3D has become a force in cinema, it’s only just starting to make inroads into the consumer/home entertainment world but the long-range implications of that encroachment should carry substantive weight in the advertising/marketing sector. Should companies be preparing for this possibility? What have leading houses done thus far? Panelists address 3D prospects and how much of a priority it should be for the ad industry.
o The Media Are The Message–Transmedia, Social Media, Digital Media, Integrated Media
New platforms and combinations thereof as well as different forms of content for them continue to emerge and evolve. This panel offers multifaceted perspectives on that evolution and how it is affecting the production, ad agency and client communities. How are traditional media and new platforms meshing? What philosophies and approaches are surfacing to help connect brands with the right audiences? What misnomers are out there relative to the coming together of art and commerce, advertising and entertainment? Get a handle on where you and your company fit and how you can leverage your expertise across varied media.
o Modelmaking: Production Companies
What business models are taking shape for production houses? How are so-called “traditional” companies adapting to more diverse content needs for a more diverse array of platforms? What new breeds of production house have hit the scene and what is the thinking behind how they’re structured? What does the entrance of traditional talent agencies and entertainment companies into the marketing sector mean for marketers and traditional commercial production suppliers? We’ll canvas such issues and compare hybrids vs. specialty houses, in-house resources vs. and/or complemented by partnerships, a work-for-hire model vs. content equity. Get a more well-defined sense of how to fine-tune your business and offerings so as to attain the best niche for yourself and your company.
o From The Director’s Chair
Q&A session with a leading multidisciplinary filmmaker.
Panelists and speakers were in the process of being confirmed at press time and will be announced soon.
New Directors Showcase
The evening’s New Directors Showcase features:
o Screening of the 2011 New Directors Showcase reel which will include 25-30 pieces of work culled from submissions from this year’s New Directors Search
o A panel introducing six of the featured new directors with two industry pros providing insight and perspective. Moderated by SHOOT editor, Bob Goldrich.
o And an after-party downstairs at the DGA Theatre. New directors mingle with more experienced directors, event sponsors, and event attendees. The party is perennially sports a fantastic mix of guests, including advertising, media and entertainment industry producers, creatives, executives, artisans and brand marketers. Guests will top off the day and evening by enjoying great food, cocktails, and the opportunity to meet the new directors and mingle with industry friends and make new contacts.
Each of the last nine years, SHOOT has conducted a worldwide search to discover the best up-and-coming directors. The search was conducted by SHOOT‘s editorial staff with input from advertising agency creative directors & heads of production, as well as production company heads and established directors. This year’s search was conducted from January 1-April 4th, 2011.
Over the years, there have been assorted cases of New Directors Showcase helmers going on to gain industry prominence. Consider David Gray who was in the 2005 Showcase and a year later went on to be nominated for the DGA Award as best commercial director of the year. (Gray was at Hungry Man when included in the ’05 Showcase and has since moved over to Station Film). And last year Ross Katz won the DGA Award for outstanding achievement in movies for TV/miniseries on the strength of his HBO film Taking Chance, the same film which garnered him inclusion in SHOOT‘s ’08 New Directors Showcase. Also in the ’08 Showcase was Harold Einstein of Station who shortly thereafter saw three Crest toothpaste spots he directed for Saatchi NY earn a Gold Lion in the Campaign category at Cannes. And Pete Circuitt of The Ebeling Group, another ’08 Showcase inductee, went on to direct CBS-TV’s half-hour primetime Xmas special Yes, Virginia for Macy’s and JWT NY, which last year won a One Show Entertainment Awards Gold Pencil.
