Music was heard loud and clear during the first night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday (9/3) at the Microsoft Theater in L.A.
Topping the evening with five wins apiece were Adele: One Night Only and The Beatles: Get Back. The latter took the Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series category as well as earning wins for directing for a documentary/nonfiction program (Peter Jackson), as well as picture editing, sound editing and sound mixing honors.
Meanwhile Adele: One Night Only was named best pre-recorded variety special and garnered wins for directing a variety special (Paul Dugdale), lighting design/lighting direction, sound mixing and technical direction.
Next in the evening’s tally was Arcane with four wins, including for Outstanding Animated Program. The other three Emmys were juried prizes for individual achievement in animation.
The music theme continued as The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent walked away with three Creative Arts Emmys, including for best live variety special. Also scoring three Emmys was Love On The Spectrum U.S., including for best unstructured reality program.
Taking two Emmys apiece were A Black Lady Sketch Show, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls, Love, Death + Robots, Luci and Desi, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and We’re Here.
Among other highlights on night one of the Creative Arts Emmys were: Chadwick Boseman winning a posthumous Emmy for his character voiceover work on What If…?; Barrack Obama becoming a first-time Emmy winner for his narration on Our Great National Parks; and Sandy Hook Promise’s “Teenage Dream” earning distinction as the best commercial (see separate story here).

First-Time Feature Directors Make Major Splash At AFI Fest, Generate Oscar Buzz
Two first-time feature directors who are generating Oscar buzz this awards season were front and center this past weekend at AFI Fest in Hollywood. Rachel Morrison, who made history as the first woman nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar---on the strength of Mudbound in 2018--brought her feature directorial debut, The Fire Inside (Amazon MGM Studios), to the festival on Sunday (10/27), and shared insights into the film during a conversation session immediately following the screening. This came a day after William Goldenberg, an Oscar-winning editor for Argo in 2013, had his initial foray into feature directing, Unstoppable (Amazon MGM Studios), showcased at the AFI proceedings. He too spoke after the screening during a panel discussion. So much for the hope that the historic accomplishment would be a ticket out of socioeconomic purgatory for Shields and her family. It seemed like yet another setback in a cycle of adversity throughout Shields’ life but she persevered, going on to win her second Gold Medal at the next Olympics and becoming a champion for gender equality and equitable pay for women in sports. Shields has served as a source of inspiration for woman athletes worldwide--as well as to the community of... Read More
