New York ad agencies big and small turned out last week (4/21) to honor the best creative advertising Madison Avenue has to offer at the 14th Annual "Best of New York" ADDY Awards.
Topping the television portion of the competition was Cliff Freeman And Partners with seven winners, including "Best of Show" for broadcast: FOX Sports "Feet" in which a father changes his child’s diaper with his feet so that his hands are free to interact with the Foxsports. com Website. "Feet" was directed by Rocky Morton of Morton Jankel Zander, Los Angeles.
Other big television winners were Ammirati Puris Lintas with five ADDYs and Ogilvy & Mather as well as Lowe & Partners/ SMS with three ADDYS apiece. Among Ammirati’s honorees was an Ameritech campaign-consisting of "PG 13," "Snooze" and "Rubber Ducky"-which copped the best direction category for helmer Bob Giraldi of bicoastal Giraldi Suarez Productions.
The event, sponsored by the Advertising Women of New York (AWNY), was held at Bridgewater’s in New York and hosted by comedian Eddie Brill. The evening was kicked off with a word from this year’s chief judge David Altschiller of the show’s host agency Hill Holliday, New York. At Altschiller’s request, a moment of silence was observed for the recent passing of McCaffrey & McCall co-founder David McCall, who died in a car wreck on April 18 while on a refugee relief mission in Albania (see story this page). Altschiller then related to his audience of colleagues and peers that a show is only as good as the work it receives and the standards of those who decide what’s good enough. "I think you’ll agree those standards are pretty high," he said.
Cliff Freeman And Partners set a standard of excellence this year for humor with its television spots for Hollywood Video and FOX Sports. The agency earned two separate awards in the television entertainment category for the Hollywood Video spots "Credits" and "Don," both directed by Baker Smith of Tate & Partners, Santa Monica.
In the television media category, Cliff Freeman took home two singles for FOX Sports "Feet," directed by Morton, and "Rope," helmed by Noam Murro of bicoastal HKM Productions. Meanwhile, the complete FOX Sports campaign "Rope," "Horse" and "Pick Up" won a single for best television media campaign, also directed by Murro. A three-spot campaign for Hollywood Video including "Action" and "Don," directed by Tate & Partners’ Smith, and "Musical," directed by Todd Phillips of bicoastal Moxie Pictures, won a single award in the television entertainment campaign category. And outside the award show’s TV categories, the spots "Action" and "Don" helped Cliff Freeman And Partners earn a multi-media campaign ADDY as well.
In addition to the aforementioned Ameritech campaign, the other four TV winners for Ammirati Puris Lintas were: three in the alcoholic beverages category for the respective Labatt USA/Rolling Rock spots "Thirsty," "History" and "Evolution" directed by Russell Bates of bicoastal X-Ray Productions; and a financial services category honoree, AETNA’s "Living Years" which features a series of Screen Actors Guild members’ home videos that were gathered together by casting director Helyn Taylor of Helyn Taylor Casting, New York, and later edited by Jerry Fried of New York-based Red Car.
Ogilvy & Mather walked away with an ADDY in the television business services and products category for IBM’s "Flame Mail," directed by Joe Pytka of PYTKA, Venice, Calif. O&M also won for GTE’s "Ice Cream Truck" for best institutional corporate television spot while the entire GTE campaign, including "Ice Cream Truck," "Contact Me" and "Hardware Store" won for best institutional corporate campaign. The GTE campaign was directed by HKM’s Murro.
Lowe & Partners/SMS copped three television ADDYs. "Yablo," a spot created for Coca-Cola/Sprite and directed by Jim and Vezna Tozzi of bicoastal Voyeur Films, won in the non-alcoholic beverage category. Sony’s "Cat & Dog," helmed by Breck Eisner of Los Angeles-based Palomar Pictures, earned an award for best household consumer product spot. And Lowe’s ad for Excite, "Screen Door"-directed by Nicholas Barker of bicoastal Chelsea Pictures-won in the national/regional "other" category.
