Veteran commercial telecine artist Rob Lingelbach has joined Santa Monica-based post/visual effects shop 525 Studios. He comes over after having spent the last four years at POP, Santa Monica, which in early 2000 was consolidated into a multi-faceted R!OT operation, also in Santa Monica (SHOOT, 3/24/00, p. 1). Both R!OT and 525 are part of the Liberty Livewire family of houses. (525 was bought by Liberty’s 4MC last year—SHOOT, 5/26/ 00, p. 7.)
Lingelbach’s post career began as an intern at Unitel, New York. His experience during his seven-year tenure there included serving as an editor. In 1983, he moved to Southern California, joining now defunct Action Video and in two years becoming a senior colorist. Lingelbach’s colorist work at Action included spots for such clients as Budweiser, Gallo, American Airlines, Ford and Chevy. In 1988 at Action, Lingelbach began working with a director to whom he gives credit for his formative industry artistic experiences: Paul Giraud of bicoastal HSI Productions. Giraud died last June in a helicopter crash while on location for a Nissan shoot, on the outskirts of Vancouver, B.C. (SHOOT, 7/7/00, p. 1).
Giraud and Lingelbach first teamed on an American Airlines assignment, beginning what led to regular creative collaborations over the next nine years. These endeavors included a ’97 Nissan Pathfinder job in which Lingelbach relayed sample scenes and color ideas to Giraud via the Internet. Giraud was shooting in South Africa at the time. This Web link enabled Lingelbach to serve both the production and commercial finishing aspects of the job, ensuring that the proper images would end up in telecine.
Lingelbach has also used the Internet to link with colorists globally. In ’94 he founded Telecine Internet Group (TIG). Now with more than 2,000 members, TIG was formed in order to network colorists worldwide, particularly those who couldn’t attend major trade shows.
After Action, Rob went to now defunct Editel/Los Angeles, and then to POP, where he was a senior colorist.
