The Jack in the Box restaurants spot, Jack Raps, directed by Dick Sittig of bicoastal/international @radical.media for his ad agency Kowloon Wholesale Seafood Company, Santa Monica, copped the best of show Sweepstakes honor in the Advertising Club of Los Angeles 34th annual Belding Awards competition.
The agency team on Jack Raps consisted of: creative di-rector/writer Sittig, art director Michael Gaw and producer Nancy Koch. The commercial-true to the comedic nature of the Jack in the Box campaign-additionally won a Belding Bowl, topping the restaurants/fast foods/ foods/wines and spirits category.
Team One Advertising, El Segundo, Calif., also came up a big winner, taking first place in several TV categories for Lexus. Distinction as the best car ad went to Lexus Late Again directed by Erich Joiner of bicoastal Tool of North America. Team Ones ensemble included creative directors Tom Cordner and Steve Levit, copywriter Eric Walker, art director Greg Wells and producer Jack Epsteen.
Another Joiner-helmed Lexus ad, Silent Treatment, scored in the truck/SUV/minivan category. Creative directors were Cord-ner, Levit and Josh Miller. Levit and Stan Toyama were art directors, with copywriting by Miller and Matt Bogen. Agency producers were Epsteen and Jennifer Willett.
Meanwhile, the best cars/ trucks/SUV/minivan dealers commercial was deemed by Belding judges to be Lexus Dogs directed by Noam Murro who at the time worked via bicoastal HKM Productions. He is currently at Stiefel & Company, Santa Monica. Cordner and Levit were creative directors. Melissa Huffman and Jim Dearing served as associate creative directors. The spot was written by Rob Stewart and art directed by Pat Zimmerman, with Epsteen and Willett producing for Team One.
Ground Zero, Santa Monica, also scored multiple Belding Bowls for its television endeavors: Breaking News-Gopher Hole for LATimes.com topped the miscellaneous TV category; ESPNs The Rick-Jockey won the low budget (any single spot costing less than $50,000 to produce) category; and Activisions Tony Hawk scored in the toys/games arena.
The latter was directed by Pat Solomon of Fusion Films, Santa Monica. Ground Zero creative directors were Court Crandall and Kirk Souder. Art director was Guy Shelmerdine; Grant Holland served as copywriter. Agency producer was Corey Bartha.
Christopher Guest of bicoastal Moxie Pictures helmed The Rick/Jockey. Crandall and Souder were creative directors; Shelmerdine art directed. Writer was Steve OBrien. Patricia Phelan and Heidi Hawkings were agency producers.
And Stephen Kessler of bicoastal Promiseland directed Breaking News-Gopher Hole. Crandall and Souder served as creative directors. The spot was written by Tyler Hampton and art directed by Arnie Presiado. Jimmy Greenway produced for the agency.
TBWA/Chiat/Day, Los Angeles, took the home electronics and home products category in the television portion of the competition for Sony Playstations Striptease directed by Bill Werts of Industrial Light + Magic Commercial Productions, Los Angeles and San Rafael, Calif. The agency team was comprised of creative director Doug Speidel, copywriter Doug Fischer, art director Marica Loots-Serna and producer Trish Bugitzedes.
Topping the media promotion category was Newline Cinemas Austin Powers, The Spy Who Shagged Me-empire cat teaser from Trailer Park, Los Angeles. The ad was directed by Blair Hayes of The Hayes Office, Santa Monica. The Trailer Park contingent included creative directors Benedict Coulter and Jim Hale (teamed with the movies star Mike Myers), art director Joe Ray and copywriters Doug Dezzni and Mike McCullers.
DDB Los Angeles copped a TV win in the retail category for Checkout.coms Deadhead/ Buh directed by Ramaa Mosley of Palomar Pictures, Los Angeles. Agency creatives were Seana Corcoran and David Angelo, with Carolyn Casey producing.
And taking the sporting goods category in television was WongDoody, Santa Monica, for adidas Americas Steeple Chase, directed by Hank Perlman of bicoastal/international hungry man. Creative director was Tracy Wong. Writers were Wong, Don McKinney and Tor Myhren. Art director was Michael Ivan Boychuk. Producing for the agency were Brian ORourke and Chantal Houle.
The Belding Awards ceremony was held last week (4/26) in Los Angeles.
