I see myself as a designer and a director with a lot of interest in new technology," says animation director Jerry van de Beek of bicoastal Curious Pictures. "The latest thing that I’m really getting into is Flash animation."
Van de Beek is well-versed in 3-D, cel, computer, and stop motion animation, as well as combinations of different styles. Some of his latest credits include Budweiser’s "Logoal," via DDB Chicago, which shows a lively Budweiser logo playing soccer; and "Anakii" and "Fantm-sklz" for Lugz shoes, out of Amster Yard, New York. The CGI spots feature a protagonist who looks like a video game character.
Van de Beek is currently exploring animation on the Internet. "I think a lot of people work in their little territories, wherever they’re comfortable," he says. "But I like to go from one thing to another-3-D, cel, stop motion, Flash. Whatever helps me, I use. … It’s not that I know about tools others don’t have. I just push the envelope with them."
His first Flash question: Can 3-D animation be transferred to Flash? The answer: "Yes," he says. "Suddenly a whole new world opens up for me to create in. It’s not just using Flash in the way everybody else is using Flash. That’s what we try to do here-combine things, combine technologies. … That’s kind of the great thing about online animation. You make it one week, and next week, everybody gets to see it."
