Visual effects artist, supervisor and consultant Jerry Steele has expanded the staff of his Steele VFX that recently opened a boutique studio in Santa Monica.
Alex Gomez has been named assistant Henry artist. For the past two-and-a-half years Gomez was at 525 Post Production (now 525 Studios), Hollywood, where he was an assistant Henry and Inferno artist who worked with Steele on numerous occasions. Prior to 525, Gomez worked at Complete Post, Hollywood, and Sunset Post, Glendale, Calif.
In addition, Tom Stanley was recently named associate producer for Steele VFX, a role in which he will assist Jo Steele, general manager and executive producer in the day-to-day operations of the company. For the past six years, Stanley had been a freelance script consultant. Previously, he was a story editor for MGM and worked in the story departments of Tri-Star Pictures and Phoenix Entertainment.
Steele VFX specializes in nonlinear online editing and compositing. The company’s administrative offices continue to be based in Sherman Oaks, Calif.

The Official Competition jury said: “Our jury was incredibly moved by Adam Elliot’s Memoir of a Snail, which is a singular achievement in filmmaking. Emotionally resonant and constantly surprising, Memoir tackles pertinent issues such as bullying, loneliness and grief head-on, creating a crucial and universal dialogue in a way that only animation can. The jury is delighted to recognize an animated film alongside its live-action peers.”
Rounding out the winners of this year’s films screening In Competition are:

- Winner of the Grierson Award in the Documentary Competition – Mother Vera (Dirs. Cécile Embleton, Alys Tomlinson)
- Winner of the Short Film Award in the Short Film Competition – Vibrations from Gaza (Dir. Rehab Nazzal)
