For the second consecutive year, Cliff Freeman And Partners, New York, won the Grand Clio in television, this time for its Outpost.com campaign-comprised of the spots "Cannon," "Band" and "Forehead"-directed by John O’Hagan of bicoastal Hungry Man. Last year, Cliff Freeman topped the Clios with its FOX Network package promoting National Hockey League coverage. Those Grand-winning FOX spots were helmed by Christopher Guest of bicoastal Moxie Pictures and went on to score a Gold Lion at Cannes.
The Outpost.com work also took a Gold Clio in the regional campaign category, with "Cannon" and "Forehead" each additionally copping Gold Clios in the retail stores category. The Outpost.com package is testament to the value of departing from the norm; in this case, not being creatively shackled by concerns over political correctness. For example, "Cannon" depicts gerbils being fired out of a cannon at a designated target: the second "o" in a concrete wall of letters spelling Outpost.com. The first misfire has the gerbil splatting against the wall and thudding flatly on the ground. It squeaks a bit and scurries away as a gentlemanly Alistair Cooke-type event host deadpans, "Cute little guy." Subsequent cannon launches are also unsuccessful; in one shot, the airborne gerbil clears the wall, landing somewhere in the darkness beyond. Finally, one gerbil is propelled through the hole in the "o"-a single red siren light goes off, signaling victory. The ad then cuts to a black screen with a super that reads: "Send complaints to Outpost.com. The place to buy computer stuff online."
Before you pen a complaint, the gerbils were not real but instead stuffed animals shot out of an air-pressurized tube rigged inside the cannon. The creative execution grew out of a simple client directive to make the Outpost.com name unforgettable.
Indeed Cliff Freeman has made its own indelible impression on the awards circuit. Named SHOOT’s Agency of the Year in ’98 (SHOOT, 12/11/98, p. 45) based on its body of creative work, Cliff Freeman has seen several of those spots gain significant recognition thus far in ’99. Earlier this month, the Outpost.com campaign took a Silver Pencil at the One Show Awards (SHOOT, 5/14, p. 1). And winning the Gold Pencil in that same One Show campaign category was a three-spot Cliff Freeman package for FOX Sports.com-"Feet," "Kids" and "Old Man" directed by Rocky Morton of Morton Jankel Zander, Los Angeles.
At the Clio Awards gala last Thursday night (5/20) in New York, "Feet" and "Old Man" each copped a Gold Clio in the corporate/institutional category. "Kids" garnered a Silver Clio. Collectively, the three ads earned a Gold Clio in the national campaign category.
Additionally, Cliff Freeman took two more Gold Clios in the national campaign category for a pair of packages promoting FOX Sports’ coverage of Major League Baseball. The two winning, three-spot campaigns were: "Rope," "Horse" and "Pickup"; and "Shopping Cart," "Pole" and "Head." The commercials were directed by Noam Murro of bicoastal HKM Productions. "Rope" and "Horse" also each picked up a Gold Clio in the corporate/institutional category.
And rounding out the Cliff Freeman slate of winners were two Gold Clios in the retail stores category: Hollywood Video’s "Action" and "Don" directed by Baker Smith of Tate & Partners, Santa Monica.
Among the other big winners was Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, whose Budweiser "Lizards" fare copped three Golds and a Silver Clio. Goodby’s award take included two Gold Clios in the national campaign category: one for "Scolding the Ferret," "Survival" and "Bad Day to be a Frog"; and the other for "Denial," "Tongue Lashing" and "Practicing Weis/Web." The six spots were directed by Tom Routson who at the time was an associate creative director at the agency. (Routson has since joined Santa Monica production house Tool of North America.)
