The Association of Imaging Technology and Sound (ITS), Vienna, Va., will honor Charles A. Steinberg, president of the Broadcast and Professional Company of Sony Electronics (SEL), Park Ridge, N.J., with an International Monitor Award for lifetime achievement. The award will be presented at a gala celebration July 24 in The Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York.
Steinberg has been president of SEL’s Broadcast and Professional Company since ’88, and is responsible for all aspects of the company including sales and marketing, operations and technical services, systems integration, software development and technology. He helped spearhead the transition of the company from a product-oriented group to one that focuses on total systems solutions for the broadcast and professional market.
He has also served as chairman of the board/CEO of Sony Trans Com, Irvine, Calif., a wholly owned subsidiary serving the airline industry with products and systems for in-flight entertainment, and as chairman of the board/CEO of Sony Cinema Products Corporation, Culver City, Calif., a wholly owned subsidiary that provides products to the motion picture industry.
Earlier this year, Steinberg was named advisor to SEL president/COO, Dr. Teruaki Aoki. In this new role, he will support the company’s DTV initiatives which include broadcast and production and digital content creation. Although Steinberg will retire in the middle of ’99, he will continue as a consultant to SEL.
Prior to joining SEL, Steinberg was with the Ampex Corporation, Redwood City, Calif., for 25 years where he served in various capacities including president, and chief executive officer and chairman of the board.
The ITS Lifetime Achievement Award is offered to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the postproduction industry. Charlie Steinberg joins a group of honorees including Dennis Muren, John Lasseter, Ralph J. Guggenheim, William T. Reeves, Doug Trumbull, Bob Pittman, David Wolper, Steve Allen and the late Jim Henson.
