Eastman Kodak Company has installed new leadership for its digital motion imaging business, Cinesite. Colin Brown has been named CEO of Cinesite, worldwide, and COO of its European subsidiary, Cinesite (Europe) Limited, based in London. Ruth Scovill has been appointed president and COO of the U.S. subsidiary, Cinesite Inc., Hollywood.
Brown has headed Cinesite (Europe) Limited since it was founded in ’94, and has served as acting CEO of the Cinesite worldwide organization for the past four months. Scovill comes to Cinesite from DreamWorks SKG, Los Angeles, where she was in corporate strategic planning. Prior to that, she was head of technology for feature animation.
"We are at the dawn of a new age, where the convergence of film and digital technologies offers unlimited possibilities," said Eric Rodli, COO for Kodak’s Entertainment Imaging division, to which Cinesite reports. "Colin Brown and Ruth Scovill will keep Cinesite at the cutting edge of the visual effects industry, while they explore new services and technologies that will give our customers more freedom to produce and distribute films in different ways."
Cinesite was founded in Hollywood in August ’92, and has subsequently provided a complete range of visual effects and restoration services for more than 300 narrative films and TV commercials. It provides digital film scanning and recording services for customers around the world. Cinesite also operates PRO-TEK vaults in Los Angeles, which provide film inspection and archiving services for studios and independent producers; and Effects Associates, a Pinewood Studios-based physical effects facility in the U.K.
Brown outlined three broad objectives for Cinesite: The company will continue to offer scanning and recording, 2-D and 3-D visual effects, and film restoration services. Cinesite will also explore and evaluate new hybrid motion imaging technologies and applications, including digital intermediate and digital mastering services.
"We have been given the mission of making our current services accessible and affordable for filmmakers around the world," related Brown. "Management at Kodak has also challenged us to explore new frontiers and bring the company into new digital arenas." Scovill added that "Kodak has made it very clear that Cinesite will be a key incubator for its evolving digital motion imaging strategy."
