Audio mixer Joe Vagnoni has joined Photomag, New York. Previously, Vagnoni was at New York’s Mixed Nuts Recording Studios, the audio post house he helped launch with fellow mixers Richard Becker and Bart Smith in ’92.
Vagnoni, who began his career in ’74, said, "[My] entire time has been with advertising clients, mixing for commercials. "I started at [New York’s] National Recording Studios (a division of National Video Center) back when they had an apprenticeship program; there weren’t many schools for audio engineering back then. And by ’76, I was doing sessions." Vagnoni later joined now defunct Trackworks, then freelanced at Howard Schwartz Recording, New York, for seven years, starting in ’85.
It was during his five-year stay at Trackworks that Vagnoni first met Photomag colleague Rex Recker. "All the engineers sort of know each other and keep crossing paths," Vagnoni explained. He and Recker kept in touch over the years. "We started talking [recently]. Carl Mandlebaum was moving downtown, so there was a spare room [at Photomag’s midtown office]. It was an easy move."
Photomag’s staff includes executive producer Bill Ronan (who is also the companys’ marketing and sales representative), general manger Carolyn Mandlavitz and mixers Recker, Stewart Small and Doug Senger at Photomag’s midtown offices, with Carl Mandelbaum at its downtown office, Photomag @ ANX.
Some of Photomag’s recent mixes include the U.S. Mint’s "Renaissance George" for The Dan Rosenthal Company, Bethesda, Md., and Visa’s "Synchronized Swimming" for BBDO New York, both mixed by Recker; Star Alliance’s "Plane" for Young & Rubicam (Y&R), New York, mixed by Mandelbaum; and "Sosa" for Fila, through Merkley Newman Harty, New York, mixed by Vagnoni.
Prior to joining Photomag, Vagnoni mixed Citibank’s "Trash Worries," "Bar Code Forest," "Mystery Pig" and "Wrong Hat" for Y&R, New York; and Meow Mix’s "Charter Boat," "Wedding" and "Carpool" via Avrett, Free & Ginsberg, New York.
