Well, we at SHOOT think the egg means many things-for one, new beginnings, as evidenced in our story "Zip-Lock Fresh," by associate editor Sandra Garcia. The piece looks at five up-and-coming directors-Pep Bosch of Palomar Pictures, Los Angeles; John Dolan of bicoastal Anonymous; Steven Oritt of Drive Media, Venice, Calif.; Joe Rey of bicoastal/international GSP4; and the mono-monikered Yuki of DNA, Hollywood-who are attempting to make their mark in the spot business.
Another group that represents new beginnings is covered in "Hopping The Fence." This collection of talent consists of the ad agency creatives and producers who have given up the relative security of an ad shop to take on spot directing full-time.
"In Memoriam," looks at two accomplished careers that were still budding and developing but, alas, ended far too soon. SHOOT’s editor, Robert Goldrich, and reporter Kathy DeSalvo, examine the lives and careers of Jhoan Camitz, of bicoastal Satellite, and Paul Giraud, of bicoastal HSI, two leading directors who tragically died this summer.
Last, but not least, are 25 profiles of some of the best commercial helmers out there. Their creative fertility makes us laugh, cry and stare with amazement and wonder-and in the process, also piques public interest in the products advertised. Among the directors profiled are John O’Hagan of bicoastal/international hungry man, who helmed Electronic Data Systems’ "Cat Herder" via Fallon, Minneapolis, which scored an Emmy nomination for best primetime commercial. There are also looks at directing teams, such as LeMoine/Miller of bicoastal/international @radical.media; Spooner/French of The Shooting Gallery, New York; and rad-ish of bicoastal Go Film, who prove that two for the price of one is, indeed, a very good deal. Others include international helmers hoping to make their reputation stateside. All of these directors continue to raise the creative bar of commercial filmmaking.
