As fans await the release of Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ Blade Runner 2049, they can get a taste of what’s to come with the first of the film’s official prologues, 2036: Nexus Dawn. It explains what happened in the world of Blade Runner between the first movie, set in 2019, and this sequel, set in 2049. The short prologue film 2036: Nexus Dawn takes place in the year 2036 and revolves around Niander Wallace, the character portrayed by Jared Leto. Wallace introduces a new line of “perfected” replicants called the Nexus 9, who are seeking the repeal of the prohibition on replicants. Created by marketing agency 3AM, a partner company to RSA Films, directed by Luke Scott (Morgan, “Meet Walter”) and produced by RSA as part of Blade Runner 2049’s marketing campaign, 2036: Nexus Dawn was filmed on set during the film’s principal photography.
Ridley Scott, executive producer of Blade Runner 2049 and director of the famed 1982 neo-noir sci-fi classic Blade Runner, commented, “Creating this type of prologue film during the production of a movie is a very particular challenge and one of the principal reasons we started 3AM. You’re dealing with a balance of production schedules, talent schedules, existing sets and locations, and asking a lot of people to work two jobs. And then you have to make sure it aligns with the filmmaker’s vision. So the idea, the script and the production have to address all of these variables. It’s like building a plane as it flies.”
Set in 2036 Los Angeles, 2036: Nexus Dawn debuted this week following the release of Blade Runner 2049’s official trailer last month. Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros., again teaming with 3AM, director Luke Scott and RSA Films, will release another gripping in-world prologue film before the film’s theatrical release.
From executive producer Ridley Scott and director Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana De Armas, MacKenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, Lennie James, Carla Juri, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista and Leto. In Blade Runner 2049, 30 years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Blade Runner 2049 debuts in theaters on October 6.
