Netflix leads networks with 15 nods, followed by HBO with 14, HBO Max's 10
“Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+) led the way with five nominations for Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards, followed by four programs with four apiece–”Hacks” (HBO Max), “I May Destroy You” (HBO), “Mare of Easttown” (HBO) and “WandaVision” (Disney+).
Netflix topped the network tally with 15 nods, just one ahead of HBO. Taking third place was HBO Max with 10, followed by Apple TV+ with eight, and then Disney+ and Showtime with five each. Additionally, Hulu and NBC garnered four apiece; Amazon, CBS, FX, PBS Kids, and Peacock each has three; and Starz earned two. Bravo, Comedy Central, Disney Jr., MSNBC, NatGeo, Paramount+, and PBS close out the nominations with one each.
The 2021 TCA Awards showcase a diverse roster of TV content across a wide array of platforms and genres, spotlighting outstanding creators, series, and stars of the 2020-2021 TV season. More than 200 TCA members, professional television critics and journalists from the United States and Canada, nominate programming available on broadcast, cable and streaming outlets. This marks the 37th annual TCA Awards.
The TCA presents awards in 13 distinct categories, honoring outstanding achievements in drama, comedy, miniseries, youth, news and information, reality, and variety, sketch or talk shows, among others. Categories have been expanded this year to feature a total of eight nominees each, with the exception of “Outstanding Achievement In Variety, Talk Or Sketch,” which has nine. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TCA will forego its formal in-person presentation once again. Winners will instead be announced at a later date.
This year’s nominations roster is dominated by an unprecedented number of first-year programs, headlined by Ted Lasso which garnered recognition for Individual Achievement In Comedy for stars Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham, as well as nominations for Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement In Comedy, and Program Of The Year.
The TCA’s coveted Program Of The Year category is, itself, a testament to the strength of the incoming class, headlined by an intriguing matchup that pits HBO’s “I May Destroy You” and “Mare of Easttown” against the HBO Max dramedy “Hacks” and Disney+’s genre-bending hit “WandaVision.” Tied with four nominations apiece, the four series also vie for Outstanding New Program. Program Of The Year also features Netflix’s captivating period piece “Bridgerton,” Amazon’s powerful limited event “The Underground Railroad,” Netflix’s stunning coming-of-age drama “The Queen’s Gambit,” and the aforementioned “Ted Lasso.”
Elsewhere, headline-grabbing profiles “Framing Britney Spears” and “Oprah With Meghan And Harry: A CBS Primetime Special” contend for the honor of Outstanding Achievement In News And Information. “I May Destroy You” creator, writer, and star Michaela Coel enters a loaded Individual Achievement In Drama landscape that includes Oscar®-winner Kate Winslet, Marvel Cinematic Universe standout Elizabeth Olsen, and Thuso Mbedu in her international debut. Trevor Noah, John Oliver, and Stephen Colbert battle for late-night supremacy in Outstanding Achievement In Variety, Talk Or Sketch. Veterans “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Pose” and “The Crown” go toe-to-toe with heralded newcomers “Lovecraft Country” and “P-Valley” in Outstanding Achievement In Drama. And genre pioneer “The Real World Homecoming: New York” seeks to reclaim its throne in Outstanding Achievement In Reality.
“This was an incredible year for fresh, inclusive content and new creators, and our nominations are a reflection of that,” said Melanie McFarland, TCA president and TV critic for Salon. “The TCA membership selected from a wealth of original offerings that broke fresh ground and presented exciting, thought-provoking experiences that redefined the television landscape. Although we will not be able to honor these landmark achievements in-person, we look forward to celebrating 37 years of the TCA Awards and sharing our top picks when the winners are unveiled.”

The Many Hires Jeremiah Wassom As Group Creative Director
Independent agency The Many has added Jeremiah Wassom as group creative director.
Wassom most recently worked a decade at Deutsch LA where, as SVP/creative director, he led the Taco Bell account and won new business for the agency. His agency past also includes AKQA and TBWAChiatDay. His creative work has touched the QSR, video games, automotive, fashion, and culture brand sectors. He also served eight years with the United States Marine Corps.
“Throughout his career, Jeremiah has helmed work that has not only made me personally jealous but has consistently pushed brands to show up in memorable and innovative ways,” said Josh Paialii, head of creative at The Many. “One look at his body of work and you will see his passion for storytelling and craft has raised the bar for entire categories, driving participation with many brands’ most loyal fans. Beyond being a world-class creative director and maker, Wassom is a proven team player and strategic thought leader. He’ll be a great addition to the leadership team at The Many working across all accounts. His role will be immediately felt as he guides and supports each of the creative leads in the department.”
A 20-year creative with agency, brand, and freelance experience, Wassom has forged a creative approach which focuses on crafting engaging connections rather than simply make ads. He sees the need for advertising to mean more, not simply do more.
The Many believes that true business growth is made possible by harnessing the power of participation and partners with brands to forge deeper connections with consumers, cultivate trust and loyalty, and maximize marketing spend and execution. The agency is built around a flexible model that offers a suite of capabilities, including... Read More
