The International Cinematographers Guild (ICG, IATSE Local 600) Publicists announced and honored winners of its 54th Annual ICG Publicists Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Friday afternoon (2/24). Deadpool (20th Century Fox) won the top honors for Best Publicity Campaign for Motion Pictures while This Is Us (20th Century Television) won the Best Publicity Campaign in Television. The awards luncheon ceremony, chaired by Henri Bollinger and co-chaired by Tim Menke, took place before an audience of more than 900, including guild members, Hollywood public relations and marketing executives, producers, studio and network executives, celebrities and press.
Perhaps the afternoon’s most eloquent and moving moments came from an awards recipient who couldn’t talk or walk–famed publicist Nanci Ryder, a founder of the venerable entertainment PR firm Baker Winokur Ryder (B|W|R Public Relations), who was diagnosed as having ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a couple of years ago. Actress Renée Zellweger, who presented the President’s Award to her long-time friend Ryder, noted that while the respected PR exec cannot speak, she still has a strong voice. Zellweger read acceptance remarks from Ryder which exhibited great wit as well as a sense of purpose when it comes to raising not only awareness of ALS but also funds to combat the disease. Ryder has spearheaded Team Nanci, comprised of industry peers, friends and colleagues who have raised more than $433,000 for the ALS Association and its Golden West Chapter. Zellweger read Ryder’s words which pledged her commitment to continue to do everything she could to generate funds to find a cure for ALS. Ryder also recalled her first client, Michael J. Fox, and how inspiring his efforts have been in fighting and leading an effort to cure Parkinson’s disease. In reference to Fox, she related, “I borrowed some of your tricks in battling ALS.”
Ryder’s sense of humor was also evident as she confessed to trying to get the President’s Award named after her. The rationale, she explained, was not personal ego but rather her feeling that given recent events it doesn’t seem that much of an honor to receive an award named President. Sitting in a wheelchair, Ryder briefly came on stage and received a standing ovation.
Also praising Ryder was Jeffrey Katzenberg, founder of DreamWorks Animation and WndrCo, who was presented with the ICG Publicists Lifetime Achievement Award. After conveying thanks to many in the industry and humorously reminiscing about various publicity events he was enlisted for, Katzenberg paused to express his love and admiration for Ryder whom he said is a source of constant inspiration. Actress Kate Hudson (Deepwater Horizon) and PMK-BNC vice chairman Brad Cafarelli presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Katzenberg.
Actor/director Denzel Washington was presented the Motion Picture Showman of the Year Award by producer Jerry Bruckheimer (the CSI series, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies). Writer/director/producer Ryan Murphy received the Television Showman of the Year Award from actress Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story).
Andrew Schwartz and John Johnson received awards for Excellence in Still Photography for theatrical features and TV, respectively. The Les Mason Award was presented to Rosalind Jarrett Sepulveda. The Press Award went to Grae Drake of Rotten Tomatoes, and the International Media Award was bestowed upon Brent Simon (China).
Veteran publicist Bollinger said in his opening remarks, “These awards demonstrate the impact that publicists have on the success of movies and television shows. It’s significant that they coincide with the Oscars since both help bring positive attention to the people responsible for popularizing the art of entertainment.”
