Director/screenwriter Trey Edward Shults’ family drama KRISHA won the Grand Jury Prize for narrative features at this week's SXSW Film Festival. Shults is also a cast member in the film with his aunt Krisha Fairchild starring in the title role.
Meanwhile taking the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary was Peace Officer directed by Scott Christopherson and Brad Barber. The film centers on a former Utah sheriff who ends up confronting the rural SWAT team he founded some 30 year earlier.
The SXSW documentary jury also presented a special recognition for directing to Alex Sichel and Elizabeth Giamatti for A Women Like Me. Sichel faced a life crisis by making this film–part documentary about her coping with terminal cancer, and part fictional narrative centering on the character of Anna Seashell (played by Lilli Taylor) who somehow manages to find the glass more than half full when faced with the same medical diagnosis. This touching, moving film follows Alex as she uses the two stories to examine what is foremost on her mind: her young daughter, marriage, faith, life and the all-too-imminent prospect of death.
Sichel, who was also the film’s writer, brought in her close friend, producer Giamatti to produce and co-direct A Woman Like Me. It was left to Giamatti to complete the film upon Sichel’s passing in June 2014.
Earning special recognition for editing was Jeff Consiglio for the Samantha Futerman and Ryan Miyamoto-directed Twinsters, a documentary in which Futerman finds out she has an identical twin sister.
On the narrative feature side, Creative Control–director Benjamin Dickinson’s tale involving Augmented Reality technology set in near future Brooklyn–won a special jury recognition for visual excellence.
