LG: What an exciting time for you. “Love Your Bottom” just went to Number One on America's Hot 100!
KOS: I know, right? It’s what I’ve dreamed of my whole life. Boo hoo, Taylor!
LG: “Bottom” is not only number one in the U.S., but in Japan, Australia, Brazil, Spain and Liechtenstein.
KOS: Yay! Where is Liechtenstein…kidding!
LG: What was the genesis of this whole phenomenon?
KOS: Genesis?
LG: I mean, how did it all come about?
KOS: Duh! Okay, well when I was 11 my mom took a video of me in the bath tub. I was singing and splashing and playing with my Katniss Barbie and I had no idea she was even in the bathroom! HaHaHa!
LG: So what happened next?
KOS: Right. So next thing I know she, like, put the video on YouTube—me in the bathtub! Super embarrassing. And I was like, Whoa, take that off YouTube now!! And mom’s like, ‘Beth, it’s already got over 3 million views and it’s been less than 2 days!’
LG: Your given name is Beth Wasserstein.
KOS: You saw my Wikipedia bio! Yes, but my artist name is Kitti OS—my manager says I’m like a crazy little operating system! And I love cats, so I gues it fits. Now everybody calls me Kitto O, which I kind of love too. But in formal situations it should always be Kitti OS.
LG: Got it. Last time I checked there were 478 million views—incredible!
KOS: Please remember, you couldn’t see any of my personal parts in the video ‘cause it was a bubble bath. LOL.
LG: True. It’s amazing what will go viral, Gangnam style, so to speak.
KOS: A girl in a bathtub—so random. Go figure.
LG: So the song you were singing in the tub actually became “Love Your Bottom”?
KOS: Uh huh.
LG: What was the genesis, I mean, what happened next?
KOS: Ha Ha! Well Usher saw the video when there were like 6 million views—so, really early on. And he brought it to the attention of super mega DJ David Guetta. Next thing I know, my mom is getting a call from Ibiza and it’s this monster DJ who wants to produce the single!
LG: That’s amazing.
KOS: Did you know you don’t pronounce the ‘z’ in Ibiza? It’s like ‘th’…’Ibitha’. That’s so weird.
LG: Yea, it’s crazy.
KOS: Anyway, David flew to New York—so cool!—and my mom signed a one-year deal with his label and we made the record. It only took 2 days!
LG: Wow, so fast. So you had the lyrics ready to go?
KOS: Super ready, but David changed a lot of stuff. I had like, ‘Love your bottom, come on everybody, love your bottom.’ And David was like, ‘Let’s see if we can make it more about female self-esteem and physical confidence’ and I’m like whatever. So then it became ‘Throw your bottom in the air, like you just don’t care, girl if you dare, throw your bottom in the air.’ Cool, right?
LG: It’s very danceable.
KOS: Duh…that was the idea! It’s also number one in spin classes worldwide—I’m so proud of that, since I recently learned to ride a bicycle!
LG: So what’s next for Kitty OS?
KOS: Ugh, so exhausting! David wants to make an album so I’m gonna be working with these song writers from Sweden, plus some rapper guys from Los Angeles—the Filthy Ca$h Konz I think. Plus, he wants me to take singing lessons which kinda stinks ‘cause I know they can make me sound like anything they want but whatever.
LG: Well you’re performing “Bottom” live on Ellen next week so it’s probably a good idea to be prepared.
KOS: It’s not like I’m nervous or anything. I just hope she doesn’t start dancing while I’m singing—so dorky.
LG: Can you actually find enough time for all the things in your life right now?
KOS: Uh, NO! And check this out—I’m designing a line of girl boxers for Target with ‘I Heart My Bottom’ on the back…SOO cute!
LG: Super cute. But back to the music for a minute—who would you say your biggest influences have been?
KOS: Hmm. Well when I was 7 One Direction came out—so their music has seen me through the biggest turning points in my life. I used to love Niall best, but now that I’m 13 I think I love Zayn. Is that crazy? I still love Niall!
LG: Well, our musical tastes change as we get older.
KOS: Totally.
