Production company Fela, with bases of operation in Toronto and Los Angeles, has added director Nathan Burland, professionally known as This Was Needed, to its roster of talent for North American representation. This marks his first representation in the U.S. and Canada.
He’s collaborated with brands including Adidas, Google, Wireless Festival, Libero, and Nike, as well as artists like Rema, Headie One, Shenseea, Wizkid, Pa Salieu, Gunna, and M24. His former representation was through Luti Media in the U.K.
Born and raised in South London, Burland moved first to Vancouver in his early teens and then later to Toronto. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in international business and pursued a career in soccer before finding his way to filmmaking. He participated in The Remix Project, an incubator providing integral filmmaking skills, coupled with working at Fela, gaining comprehensive hands-on experience in various facets of production.
“I’ve always loved telling elaborate stories,” said Burland. “My background informs the narratives I choose to tell and I’m dedicated to being an example and inspiration to young kids coming up like I did. I’m very excited to be directing with Fela now, because the company, and everyone who works there, shares my values and my passion for true collaboration.”
Taj Critchlow, founder and managing partner at Fela, said, “Nate is tenacious and brave. He shines a light on his culture and does so in a compelling way, bringing intention to every project. He’s always pushing himself beyond his comfort zone and evolving. We couldn’t be happier to welcome him to the Fela family.”
