Postproduction house Lost Planet has added editor Catherine Bull to its roster of talent. Her career encompasses high-profile commercials, film collaborations with artists and museums, documentaries, and an exemplary list of recurring collaborators.
Hailing from the Bay Area, Bull started her career at First Edition in New York City before moving to Progressive Image Group and eventually Spot Welders in Los Angeles, where she worked for the past 17 years. Her lyrical, poetic style and keen ear for melodic rhythms in dialogue and music are hallmarks of her thoughtfully cut films. She has worked on many films about the lives and work of artists, including LACMAโs Ed Ruscha, Woody, and the Worldโs Hottest Pepper, a Lance Acord-directed short film about L.A. artist Ed Ruscha as seen through his personal spaces. Bull has collaborated with Acord on numerous other projects, including the Nike campaign โFind Your Greatness,โ which coincided with the 2012 Olympics in London.
Bull has cut work for brands including Jeep, Ford, Coca-Cola, Pandora, Nike, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Ray-Ban. She also edited several Super Bowl commercials, including Chevyโs documentary-style ad โMy Dadโs Car,โ directed by longtime collaborator Chris Wilcha, and Fordโs โStuck,โ helmed by directorial duo Hoffman/Metoyer. Noted photographer and director Lauren Greenfield has also tapped Bull to edit many of her projects, including the Tribeca Film Festival short Beauty CULTure and Magic City, commissioned by GQ and Condรฉ Nast Entertainment, as well as Social Studies, a five-part documentary series premiering 9/27 on FX/Hulu that explores the experiences of a diverse group of L.A. teens growing up in the age of social media. Bull also edited the short film Dollhouse from directing team Terri Timely, which premiered at SXSW and tells the story of Reborn Doll enthusiasts. Other documentary work cut by Bull includes Brave Girl Risingย from the International Rescue Committee, highlighting the lives of girls living in Somali refugee camps.
Bull said, โI have many close friends and colleagues whoโve worked with Lost Planet and raved about how amazing they are to work with. Then, I met everyone at Lost Planet, and they were so warm and welcoming, so I knew I was in the right place. I enjoy the laid-back family vibe and am very excited by the shopโs wide-ranging body of work. I know that Lost Planet will support any creative endeavor I want to try, and Iโm thrilled to join their ranks.โ
Gary Ward, Lost Planetโs executive producer, added, โIโve been a huge fan of Catherineโs work for a long time. Weโve kept in touch over the years and I always believed she would be a great fit at Lost Planet. Sheโs extremely creative and a wonderful collaborator. We are excited we finally get a chance to work together.โ
