Brian Carmody, managing partner/co-founder of Smuggler, has been named the chair of the 2011 AICP Show, The Art & Technique of the American Commercial, which debuts June 8 in New York at The Museum of Modern Art. Entries for the Show & Next Awards are now being accepted, with a promotional campaign supporting the call for entries launching this week.
“Chairing the AICP Show in its 20th year is an amazing honor,” said Carmody. “This is the most important award show in the U.S. It truly captures the culture of each year through advertising, and I’m really excited to oversee the Show and its fantastic committee.”
“Brian’s expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment to creativity makes him a perfect fit as the 2011 Show Chair.” noted Matt Miller, president/CEO of the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP), “His contributions to production and his ability to recognize outstanding and innovative work are real assets to the Show.”
Campaigning season
To support the call for entries, a team of students at the VCU Brandcenter crafted a campaign, “All Art is Advertising,” which plays on the fact that all work honored by the AICP Show & Next Awards becomes a part of the archives of the Department of Film at the Museum of Modern Art. The package centers on a series of case study videos which examine how historically, great works of art were used as solutions to branding issues.
The campaign launches at www.isyouradvertisingart.com with the “Sistine Chapel” case study. Subsequent films will follow, along with print and banner ads. Additionally, a tumblr, artofadvertising.tumblr.com, will feature insights from the judges and participants in past installments of the Next Awards.
This year, the Next Awards and Show each have a new category. The Show adds Direction which, in addition to several other categories that highlight specific directorial contributions, encompasses all areas of craft, in bringing imagination, innovation and vision to an idea. A new App category was added to the Next Awards in recognition of the incredible marketing communications being created in this medium. It honors innovative branded applications for mobile devices, television, and computer commissioned by a client.
Additionally, Carmody and the Board of Governors collaborated with the AICP Digital Board to clarify the definitions for Design and Animation. Entrants to those categories, as well as Visual Effects, now have the option of providing a “making of” video.
The Show entry site, powered by Nice Spots, is now open. The entry deadline for the Show is March 4, 2011 for work airing March 8, 2010 — February 27, 2011.
