CODAworx, the hub of the commissioned art economy, has announced the winners of the second-annual CODAvideo Awards today at SOFA CHICAGO, the premier gallery-presented art fair dedicated to three-dimensional art and design.
CODAvideo Awards recognizes videos that tell the stories of commissioned art projects. Winners in five categories were selected by an international jury, and design + art enthusiasts from around the globe cast their vote for two People’s Choice winners. Top honors were awarded to video projects in the following categories:
Concept
A Mathematical Theory of Communication, submitted by Landmarks, dives into the concept behind a large-scale, computer-generated mural in The Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex & Dell Computer Science Hall at The University of Texas at Austin. The public art agency, Landmarks, selected Casey Reas, a computer scientist and artist, to complete the mural because he uses software art to explore systems. Reas blended conceptual art and information science by merging aspects of both to create these experiential data landscapes.
Collaboration
Foresta Lumina, submitted by Moment Factory, celebrates the creation and installation of a large-scale multimedia environment in Vancouver, Canada, and highlights the collaborative effort between the Moment Factory project team. Eastern Quebec’s Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook commissioned Moment Factory to put their park on the tourist map by creating an anchor experience for visitors and received more than they asked for with this creative illuminated forest.
Process
The Kelpies, submitted by Walid Salhab, captures a remarkable feat of engineering by documenting the construction of two enormous sculptures by artist Andy Scott in Falkirk, UK. Walid Salhab in his dramatic use of time-lapse stop motion video techniques has captured the installation process in a breathtaking video comprised of 120,000 unique photographs.
Experience
Well-Tempered Hygrometer Part II, submitted by Anna Kubelik, transports the viewer into the physical space of this kinetic sound installation in the humid dungeon of an old castle in Buchs, Switzerland. The installation is comprised of over 4,000 components that react to the humidity of the air to create sound with water droplets that fall on xylophone keys below. This project is a collaboration between artist Anna Kubelik and composer Simon Goff; video by Sabrina Knierim.
Imagination
Blooms, submitted by Charlie Nordstrom & John Edmark, animates 3-D printed sculptures in an imaginative way that, short of seeing in person in San Francisco, is best experienced through video. By spinning the art and using the camera’s frame rate and shutter speed, videographer Charlie Nordstrom brings to life artist John Edmark’s beautiful spiral sculptures.
People’s Choice prizes were awarded to Flying Sheets of Paper, submitted by Mery Crystal Ra, in Tampere, Finland, and Visions of America: Amériques, submitted by Refik Anadol, from Los Angeles, California.
“Here at CODAworx, we believe in the power of video,” said Toni Sikes, CEO of CODAworx. “Outside of experiencing great design and art projects in person, video is simply the only medium that can transport an audience into the space, tell the story behind the artwork, give them a peek into the artist’s mind, and allow them to see the entire process of creation. The CODAvideo Awards lets design and art professionals around the world share the experience of an artist’s work.”
This year’s CODAvideo Awards received submissions by artists, design professionals, public art agencies, and videographers from 17 countries. Jurors from the filmmaking, marketing, and art industries selected winners in the five categories. The jury’s Top 100 selections were exhibited online, where design + art enthusiasts from around the globe were invited to vote for their favorites. Over 76,700 votes were cast to select the two People’s Choice winners.
The CODAvideo Awards winners will be featured during the SOFA CHICAGO art fair this weekend with an estimated attendance of over 35,000. And, the winners will be featured throughout the next year on the CODAworx website.
The 2015 CODAvideo Awards is sponsored by General Glass Industries. Proud partners of the 2015 CODAvideo Awards include SOFA CHICAGO, SHOOT Magazine/SHOOTonline, Caesarstone, Archiproducts, Visual Art Source, Artscene, Cartouche Creations, and Forecast Public Art.
