Scott Kaplan, whose body of work as a producer includes assorted award-winning commercials, has launched production company Friends & Family. The new L.A.-based shop opens with a roster of directors which includes Heidi Berg, “Buddy,” Caleb Slain, Tash Tung, Jack Turits and Kelsey Larkin. The lineup has collective accolades that include two Emmy nominations and appearances at the Cannes Film Festival and the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design.
Kaplan has also brought on board Jed Herold as an executive producer to lead the client-facing side of the company. Meanwhile EP Kaplan will funnel his experience to handle strategy as well as director and agency relations. His culture-setting work as a line producer contains milestone ads like Old Spice’s “The Man Your Man Can Smell Like,” which earned an Emmy, Cannes Grand Prix and D&AD Black Pencil; a number of Apple’s iconic iPod commercials featuring Paul McCartney, Eminem, Bob Dylan, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others. Kaplan has produced for many directors such as Mark Romanek, Tom Kuntz, Gus Van Sant, Malcolm Venville and Noam Murro. Prior to connecting at Friends and Family, Kaplan and Herold had been freelancing.
Friends & Family directors Berg, Slain and Turits had most recently been with production house Superdoom. “Buddy” had been non-exclusive prior to joining Friends & Family. Larkin is with Skin and Bones Film in Canada, and was previously handled in the U.S. by Yard Dog. Tung gains her first U.S. commercial representation via Friends & Family; the director’s international affiliations included Blink in the U.K. and LA/PAC in France.
As for the Friends & Family moniker, Kaplan explained that it reflects the company ethos as he will channel his creative advertising expertise to craft smart, honest and hilarious content set apart by the quality of his longstanding partnerships with clients, agencies and crew.
