Actress Kate Hudson made her directorial debut recently as part of Reel Moments, a short film series sponsored by Glamour magazine and produced via Freestyle Productions, New York. Sound Lounge, New York provided her its sound design and mix talent for the project. (Established in 2006, Sound Lounge Music and Sound Design is the newest division of Sound Lounge, building upon the success of Marshall Grupp Sound Design.) Trish Fuller of The Whitehouse, N.Y., edited the film.
The goal of Reel Moments, now in its third year, is to empower women by producing female-friendly short films based on personal essays by readers, creating opportunities for females to direct. Hudson’s first effort, Cutlass, is a generational tale about family and tradition. With sound design by Marshall Grupp and mix by Philip Loeb and Cory Melious, the short film co-stars Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning, Virginia Madsen, Chevy Chase and Kristen Stewart.
“It felt like a very high end major Hollywood movie. It was a little slice of one, but it had that feel,” Loeb related.
He described Hudson as funny and smart with the ability to command the room. “She knows exactly what she wants. She is a musician herself and I think that helps a lot in the mix process and the sound design process,” Loeb said.
This is not the first time Sound Lounge participated in Reel Moments. The first year the company was asked to work on two films, Trudie Styler’s Wait, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Dealbreaker. But this is one of the first projects that Sound Lounge’s entertainment division, advertising department and sound design division collaborated on, setting a new precedent on how long form projects will be orchestrated in the future. “It’s really cool, especially as advertisers are moving towards more long format projects. This is something that we are going to be seeing a lot of and it’s something that we are completely capable of doing,” Loeb said.
Actresses Kirsten Dunst and Rita Wilson also helmed shorts this year. The films premiered at a screening on Oct. 9 at the Directors Guild of America Theater in Los Angeles. The shorts can be accessed at www.glamour.com.
