The Hollywood Section of SMPTE®, the organization whose standards work has supported a century of advances in entertainment technology, will explore the growing phenomenon of eSports and its impact on the broadcast industry at its monthly meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, in Hollywood.
Professional league video gaming has modeled itself after real-world sports. In broadcast and streaming applications, it has adopted elements from traditional sports broadcasting such as league structures, match commentary, player profiles and other elements, while adding a few twists.
Cameron Reed, director of H1Z1 Pro League, will describe the anatomy of eSports and the technology that drives it. Reed will be joined by H1Z1 engineer in charge Matt Battaglia and video controller Bob Kertesz, as well as Michael Little, president, Artistic Resources Corp.; Jose Soriano, technical director, Blizzard Studio, and Josh Rizzo, vice president/ technology, 24P Dailies Lab, Beechwood Services (SPE). The discussion will be preceded by a screening of Rizzo’s short film The Rise of eSports.
“Broadcast and live-streaming eSports events attract millions of passionate viewers worldwide,” said SMPTE Hollywood Section Chair Jim DeFilippis. “We’re excited to offer our members the opportunity to learn about this rapidly evolving form of entertainment from industry insiders involved in its present and future.”
Cameron Reed, director, H1Z1 Pro League, has been directing live, multi-camera eSports productions since 2014. His work has aired on ESPN2, the NFL Network, Disney XD, Twitch, YouTube and Hulu. His credits include Madden NFL ‘18 Championship Series, Intel Extreme Masters Oakland 2017 and FIFA Interactive World Cup.

About SMPTE®
For more than a century, the people of SMPTE (pronounced “simp-tee”) have sorted out the details of many significant advances in media and entertainment technology, from the introduction of “talkies” and color television to HD and UHD (4K, 8K) TV. Since its founding in 1916, SMPTE has received an Oscar® and multiple Emmy® Awards for its work in advancing moving-imagery engineering across the industry. SMPTE has developed thousands of standards, recommended practices, and engineering guidelines, more than 800 of which are currently in force today. SMPTE Time Code™ and the ubiquitous SMPTE Color Bars™ are just two examples of SMPTE’s notable work. As it enters its second century, SMPTE is shaping the next generation of standards and providing education for the industry to ensure interoperability as the industry evolves further into IT- and IP-based workflows.
SMPTE’s global membership today includes more than 7,000 members: motion-imaging executives, creatives, technologists, researchers, and students who volunteer their time and expertise to SMPTE’s standards development and educational initiatives. A partnership with the Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) connects SMPTE and its membership with the businesses and individuals who support the creation and finishing of media content. Information on joining SMPTE is available at www.smpte.org/join.
