Directors Richie Smyth and Kieron J. Walsh have joined MUGSY for commercial and branded content representation in the U.S. market. Both Smyth and Walsh are award-winning storytelling directors with a wide variety of experience in commercials, feature films and other types of content creation.
Smyth is known for his stunning visual storytelling style, keen direction of performance and dialogue-driven spots, and striking automotive work. He directed his first feature film – The Siege of Jadotville – in 2016. He also frequently collaborates on film and video projects with a local band from his hometown named U2.
“I’m really looking forward to this new collaboration with MUGSY,” says Smyth. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with members of the MUGSY team in the past, and believe we have a shared vision for how to bring a true sense of filmmaking to advertising projects.”
Walsh is equally adept at comedy and drama, and his best work often combines elements of both. In addition to his spot and brand content experience, Walsh has directed three feature films and has produced and directed several award-winning television series. He is preparing to direct his next feature film later in 2018.
“It’s exciting to be joining MUGSY and jumping into the U.S. market,” says Walsh. “I feel my ability to bring strong and natural performances out of actors is a key to creating great advertising. Having viewers connect with the people on screen is something I strive to do before all else.”
Growing up in Dublin, Smyth got his start as a fashion and advertising photographer. That helps explain the edgy, photographic style of his commercials and music videos. Smyth also delivers compelling, truthful performances from actors of all ages. His automotive work is grounded in reality and natural moments. A sought after director on several continents, Smyth has directed award-winning commercials for many high profile brands including Toyota, Coors, Nike, Pepsi, Smith & Nephew, Macy’s and Tesco.
Walsh originally studied fine arts with a specialty in sculpture before deciding he liked people better when they were walking and talking, and turned to film direction. He enjoys jumping between spot, TV and film projects and believes what he learns from each format helps him become a better director in all of them. Walsh has directed commercials for clients such as Guinness, Nissan, Kellogg’s, GE Money, National Lottery, and he has been nominated and won many awards – Cannes Lion, Mobius, D+AD, Royal Television Society, IFTA, and ICAD.
