To today’s consumer, a fast-talking sales pitch promoting cellular phone service sounds like a form of marketing torture. But in the context of "Auctioneers," a :30 for Aerial Communications out of San Francisco agency Goldberg Moser O’Neill, the scenario instead is an entertaining, engaging vehicle underscoring just how much two people can say in a single, solitary minute.
In this case, the couple consists of a husband and wife. She calls him from a pay telephone, reaching him on his cellular phone and the conversation begins. It’s incredibly clear that beyond sharing their lives, they also have an occupation in common-that of auctioneer. In a feverishly paced yet light-hearted exchange, the couple discusses the mundane-at least that’s what we can discern from a barrage of rapid fire, auctioneer-style tongue flapping.
To paraphrase, the discussion over what to have for dinner later that evening sounds like a high-stakes auction. He wants chicken. She wants beef. Poultry wins out in barker-style repartee. Then comes the question of how to cook the chicken. The dialogue turns to charcoal briquettes and then the bidding begins regarding how many to buy. "Do I hear 20 briquettes? 30? 40?" Ultimately the couple agrees on that evening’s entr e and the mode of meal preparation.
The amusing phone conversation is sandwiched between voiceovers talking up Aerial’s money-saving offer. "When you answer the phone, Aerial gives you the first minute free. You can say a lot in a minute," relates the voiceover as an intro to the auctioneers’ dialogue. That basic message is then repeated at the phone call’s conclusion as the voiceover points out that the first-minute-free deal makes Aerial’s "rate plans go farther."
