Bob Samuel—who left his post as New York-based executive producer for bicoastal Coppos Films earlier this year (SHOOT, 5/14, p. 1)—has resurfaced, offering strategic management and personal consulting services to the spot community.
Upon exiting the Coppos studio, Samuel initially planned to launch his own production company. He even had key elements in place, including financing and some prospective directors. But he opted to detour from that course based on feedback he solicited from the marketplace. In talking to a cross-section of ad agencies, advertisers, production executives and helmers, Samuel found they weren’t exactly clamoring for another production house. Instead, with company profit margins shrinking and the price of top talent increasing, Samuel saw a greater industry need for expertise that could help in such areas as formulating business and career development strategies for production houses and directors, respectively.
"There are great companies out there doing incredible creative work, but they’re asking me for some help with direction and goals," related Samuel, who remains a New York resident. "You know, come in and help the sales team get better numbers, communicate better with clients, help with directors. Some of the big advertisers are asking me to act as a liaison with the production process. Some gifted directors are asking for career guidance."
Preliminary response has been positive, according to Samuel. "There seems to be a real need for this and I get to coach and consult with some terrifically smart and talented people … This allows me to concentrate on the areas of our business I really enjoy."
Samuel declined to disclose the clientele with whom he’s currently working. "It’s important for people and companies to know that their information and circumstances are guarded. It really boosts the effectiveness of the work we do [together]."
Samuel has experience on both the agency and production house sides of the commercialmaking fence. He had a 12-year tenure as a New York agency producer, spanning such shops as DDB, McCann-Erickson, Saatchi & Saatchi Compton (now Saatchi & Saatchi) and Ammirati & Puris (now Ammirati Puris Lintas). He then jumped over to Coppos, beginning an eight-year run. Samuel broke in with Coppos as its East Coast rep, was later promoted to head of sales and then added executive producer responsibilities.
