Bicoastal Coppos Films has secured Joanne Ferraro as national director of sales/East Coast managing director, and promoted Michael Appel, longtime producer for director/company principal Mark Coppos, to VP/executive producer. Based in New York and Los Angeles, respectively, Ferraro and Appel will work closely together in concert with company chairman Bill Bratkowski.
At press time, Appel was in the midst of producing a Prodigy campaign being directed by Coppos and Virginia Lee (a.k.a. the team of Coppos/Lee) for TBWA/Chiat/Day, New York. After wrapping that assignment, Appel will assume his new responsibilities for the overall operation.
Meanwhile, Ferraro is slated to join the Coppos studio on Nov. 1. She most recently served as director of sales for Creative Film Management International, New York. Prior to that, she was director of sales and manager of the New York office for bicoastal/international The Artists Company and its sister shop, The A+R Group.
Appel and Ferraro are assuming many of the responsibilities held by executive producer Allison Nunn and New York-based exec producer/head of sales Bob Samuel, who both left Coppos Films some five months ago (SHOOT, 5/14, p. 1). Samuel has since resurfaced in the strategic management and personal consulting business (see separate story p. 4).
Ferraro will head up sales and marketing efforts for Coppos Films, which has a directorial roster consisting of Coppos/Lee; Mike Bigelow; Craig Gillespie; Leslie Libman; Steve Suchman; and Marty Cannellakis and Brian Aldrich (a.k.a. the directing team of Marty+Brian).
"Bill [Bratkowski] and I thought Joanne [Ferraro] was the perfect person to spearhead our sales efforts across the country," said Appel. Bratkowski noted that Ferraro has "worked with companies similar to Coppos—high-end, stable production companies with talented directors. She knows how to talk to creatives and [agency] producers as well as help build our directors."
Coppos related that the company has wanted Appel to move up to a lead capacity for several years. The director added that Ferraro’s hiring will free New York-based Kira Gourguechon to concentrate on day-to-day sales. Gourguechon helped Coppos Films maintain its East Coast presence after Samuel’s departure. "Kira really helped us to hold down the fort, and will continue to augment our sales in New York," said Bratkowski. "With Joanne, Kira has the opportunity to learn from one of the best."
The Coppos studio is repped by Gourguechon in New York, Vicky Miller on the West Coast and Gay Guthrey in the Midwest and Texas.
Ferraro said she decided to join Coppos after several meetings with Bratkowski and Appel. "The company from top to bottom is focused on making great commercials," related Ferraro, who added that her new roost has "a great mix of directors: some veteran, some still developing a following, but everyone is active and approachable."
At Coppos, Ferraro will reunite with head of production Alexandra Chamberlain. The two had earlier worked together at The Artists Company and The A+R Group.
