Editor Brian Hicks has joined Red Car/Dallas, a creative editorial shop that also has offices in New York, Santa Monica and Chicago. He had worked as a Dallas-based independent editor for the last four years.
Hicks has already cut several projects under the Red Car banner, including a regional Pizza Hut spot called "What’s Your Excuse" via Dieste & Partners, Dallas. He has also edited a series of regional ads for the Office of the Attorney General, promoting its crime victims compensation fund. That assignment was contracted by Production Works, Houston.
Red Car/Dallas managing director Carrie Callaway said, "When I first met Brian, he had this thriving, creative personality and a hot, fun reel that expressed [who he was]. These traits complete the package for a great film editor. He fits perfectly into the culture at Red Car."
Hicks related that he was contacted by Red Car owner/editor Larry Bridges after several people—including new Red Car Southwest sales rep Chuck Peil of Peil & Associates, Dallas—recommended the editor. "We talked a few times," said Hicks, "and then I signed on the dotted line."
In ’92, while Hicks was a runner at now defunct Pyramid Post, Dallas, he met Norry Niven of Stone Core Films, Dallas. In ’95, after cutting eight episodes of CBS series Walker, Texas Ranger, Hicks approached Niven about the possibility of working together. Their collaboration from ’95-’97 provided Hicks the opportunity to edit some 2,000 karaoke videos, which Niven directed for L.A.-based Pioneer Entertainment. Hicks credits those videos as key in helping him to develop his editing style, which he described as consisting of high-energy, quirky, fast cuts. "We got to do what we wanted to do," recalled Hicks. "We got to be very creative. Not too many editors get to experiment as much as I did."
Hicks’ credits include a currently-airing Niven-helmed Wal-Mart spot, "Home Entertainment Center," via Bernstein-Rein, Kansas City, Mo. Hicks explained that the retailer wanted to target young people with the ad, which features two high school kids in Wal-Mart’s music section. "For Wal-Mart commercials, this is really the first of its type," said Hicks. "They were trying to appeal to a new market, and the ad was edgy and fun."
Hicks’ other recent credits include an American Iron Horse motorcycle spot out of Joiner Rowland Serio, Dallas, and the video for "Riot Nrrd" by 2 Skinnee J’s, which is now airing on MTV’s 120 Minutes program. Hicks also won a ’97 Telly Award for best editing of a rock music video for Soak’s "Me Compassionate."
Hicks joins a Red Car/Dallas editorial roster comprised of Jonathan Edwards, Ron Sussman, Joe Elwood and Royce Graham. The company is slated to move into a new 6,500 sq. ft. facility in early November.
