One Union Recording Studios, San Francisco, has unveiled its digital 5.1 surround sound studio, featuring Euphonix’s System 5 high-performance digital audio mixing console. One Union’s purchase of the System 5 has been billed as the first installation of the console in the professional audio industry.
One Union went completely digital in ’95 with two studios. Now the audio post house’s new third studio—aptly called Studio Three—is designed to broaden the company’s services into the 5.1 arena, which company principal, chief engineer Eric Eckstein, said will figure prominently in the ad market over the coming years. "Although HDTV and digital TV are still in their relative infancy, it won’t be long before all program material will be available to the consumer in a 5.1 format," related Eckstein. "Our new suite is designed both technically and aesthetically to facilitate not only our current client needs but also their future needs when 5.1 mixes on spots become more in demand."
Designed to accommodate projects ranging from TV and radio spots to episodic TV and feature films, System 5 embraces traditional mixing methods for easy use. Configurable from 52 to 208 full-featured channels, the console is modular, expandable and flexible. Up to 48 group, 48 mix, 24 aux and 22 multi-format surround sound monitor busses are available.
Eckstein recently deployed the system on a package of ESPN spots directed by Barton Landsman of bicoastal/international @radical.media for Lowe & Partners/SMS, San Francisco. One Union was a beta testing site for the console.
Studio Three also features a video projection system, a 100-inch, THX-approved video screen wall and an isolated voiceover booth that holds up to eight people. In addition to the new studio, a private reception, lounge and kitchen areas have been built. New administrative offices have also been constructed to support clients’ scheduling and production needs. One Union specializes in audio and audio-for-video recording, editing, mixing and custom sound design. The company’s owners are Eckstein, facility director John McGleenan and special projects consultant Jeff Roth.
As earlier reported (SHOOT, 8/20, p. 11), One Union recently expanded on the personnel front, adding senior engineer Vance Walden, who had been working via DubeyTunes Studios, San Francisco. Walden has wrapped at his new roost an EA Sports ad, "Madden 2000," promoting the NFL Playstation game for San Francisco agency Odiorne, Wilde, Narraway & Partners. Walden handled sound recording, editing, sound design and audio mixing for that assignment.
