Beware of things that go bump in the night. Indeed, this spot has us bumping all over the place as it opens on what appears to be the POV of a would-be robber approaching a house. A potted plant gets knocked over as the camera moves in on the backdoor of the residence. The door opens and the intruder enters the home. We find ourselves in the kitchen, where the clumsy burglar knocks over a container of spices.
Meanwhile, an unsuspecting man slumbers deeply in the bedroom. The bedroom door opens and the camera moves in on him. Sensing that something is amiss, he awakens.
The man opens his eyes to find the interloper standing on his chest—the break-in artist is a lawn gnome.
Needless to say, the unexpected sight throws the man off guard. The gnome also has company—dozens of other gnomes who stand around the bed. The main gnome, still planted on the man’s chest, suddenly speaks: "Free CD."
The spot cuts to a graphic promoting a CD sale at Wherehouse Music retail stores. A voiceover touts the sale—"Buy 3, get the 4th free"—and then we’re returned to the bedroom where the man is attempting to take the gnome off his chest. The gnome says, "Uh-uh," and the man pulls his hand away.
A second spot, "Little Stalkers—DVDs," similarly depicts gnomes terrorizing a woman who’s alone in her home. The two commercials were directed by Enno Jacobsen of Right Brain Films, Beverly Hills, Calif., for agency Colby & Partners, Santa Monica. The agency creative ensemble consisted of creative director Rick Colby, art director Brad Gantt, copywriter Jason Sperling, executive producer Mike Davison and producer Yuko Ogata.
The Right Brain support team included executive producer Stuart Wilson and producer Laurie Cooper. The spot was shot on location in Toluca Lake, Calif., by DP Ramsey Nickell.
Rick Lobo of Revue, Santa Monica, edited the two-spot package, backed by assistant editor Olu Aiyegbusi and executive producer Tatiana Derovanessian. Revue’s Josh Kirschenbaum served as compositor/online editor. Colorist was Paul Bronkar of
Company 3, Santa Monica. Audio mixer was Peter Rincon of Santa Monica-based POP Sound.
Sound designer was Revue’s Lobo. Aaron Peterson and Neil Berkley of Flux Capacity, Los Angeles, were music composer and executive producer, respectively.
Chadwick Palmtier was this spot’s principal actor. The SAG/AFTRA Commercials Contract Standing Committee has granted a waiver to allow commercials to be available for viewing on SHOOTonline.com. The spots cannot be copied, downloaded or emailed.
