It was a sweet night for AKA NYC at the 12th Annual Davey Awards as the entertainment marketing agency captured three Gold Awards for its work on behalf of the upcoming Broadway musical CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.
AKA won Gold for “Integrated Campaign in Integrated Campaign-Promotional/Branding” for its Something Delicious campaign. The effort encompassed online, print and broadcast advertising, including online video content, broadcast commercials and a spot co-branded with Mastercard. The agency also earned Gold in the category “Commercial in Commercial-Entertainment,” while the online video content from the Something Delicious campaign won Gold for “Online Advertising & Marketing in Campaign Categories-Promotional/Branding.” Gold is the highest honor in each category.
“We are thrilled to be so honored by our peers in the advertising world,” said AKA NYC managing partners Elizabeth Furze and Scott Moore in a joint statement. “We are extremely proud of this campaign, which is the work of a large team of inspired and dedicated individuals. We congratulate them and the producers of CHARLIE for their outstanding effort and success.”
AKA’s campaign for CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY was conceived to build anticipation over the arrival of “something delicious” in New York City. A series of teaser spots centered on a mysterious stranger who appears in the city riding in a vintage purple sedan. In the climactic commercial, the stranger is revealed as Willy Wonka and he proceeds to transform New York’s best loved landmarks into towering candy sculptures. Shot on location at sites across Manhattan and Brooklyn, the commercial employed storytelling techniques and dazzling special effects, unusual in a Broadway advertising campaign.
The agency’s team was led by Executive Creative Director Bashan Aquart, Content Director Jamaal Parham, Creative Directors Ryan Cunningham and David Barrineau, Executive Producer Adam Coffia, and Account Director Jennifer Blanco. Broadway previews for CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, The New Musical begin on March 28, 2017.
Earning top honors at the Davey Awards, which recognize outstanding creativity from small advertising agencies worldwide, is becoming an annual event for AKA. In 2014, it won five Silver Awards for its work in behalf of the Tony Award®-winning Best Musical ONCE and Tony Award-winning Best Play ALL THE WAY. Last year, the agency won three Silver Daveys for its broadcast campaign for MATILDA THE MUSICAL.
