NY-based editorial shop Fluid editor Michael Elliot lights up key social media channels including the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, the New York Times and PBS News Hour with a poignant documentary short which challenges the controversial new PARCC and SBAC standardized testing prevalent in many US schools. “The Other PARCC” centers on parents who are advocating against high-stakes testing and features real parents, students and academics recounting their experiences with the test.
Elliot gained significant traction through his HuffPo article, containing the video, entitled “Why Our Kids Don’t Love School Anymore.” Elliot spearheaded the political advocacy social media campaign, conducting 25 interviews on location in New Jersey and shooting the video himself for Montclair Cares About Schools and nLightn Media.
“Social media is an ideal platform for political advocacy,” explains Elliot. “This type of short acts like a long form political ad… but it needs to have a clear, personal voice in order to work on social media.” Elliot says his work on social platforms is a logical progression for his career in editing. “Social media is one of the most dynamic parts of the [advertising] business right now,“ he notes. The editor’s social media success with The Other PARCC enabled him to be selected as a digital blogger for the Huffington Post, which provides a platform for his films in the future. Next up for Elliot’s social filmmaking endeavors is a documentary short on the Detroit water crisis, in collaboration with RESET director Andrew Douglas.
