Storefront Music spent a busy sophomore year composing a procession of memorable music for American Express, out of agencies Ogilvy & Mather (spot campaigns) and DigitasLBi (for online media). The music and sound design company was founded by renowned trumpet player John “Scrapper” Sneider and Mommyheads frontman Adam Elk.
Started in February
Back in February Sneider and Elk were contacted by the music department at Ogilvy & Mather to compose music for new American Express campaigns highlighting the release of its new EVERYDAY card. The spots feature SNL alum and 30 Rock actress/comedian Tina Fey using the card around Manhattan. Shot in black and white, Sneider and Elk’s approach was to match the timeless look with a 17 piece big-band ensemble, recorded at Sear Sound, one of NYC’s most vintage studios (patronized by artists such as Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, Steely Dan, Wynton Marsalis and Paul McCartney). For the project, Sneider and Elk leveraged the studio’s vast collection of vintage analog recording equipment. The final audio was appropriately mixed in mono. All of these elements contributed to an incredibly open, warm, swinging and fun sound in support of the spots, matching Tina Fey’s witty personality. The ads made their debut on the Academy Awards broadcast.
Tapped For American Express Digital Campaign
Committed to doing quality digital work, Storefront then took on the challenge of composing for American Express’s Passion Project, this time for agency Digitas. The Passion Project focuses on the passions of everyday people, with the support of American Express. The digital campaign has thus far garnered over 15 million views. When the digital component of the Amex Everyday card was finalized, Storefront was ready, first composing a theme song for Amex’s animated series titled, “Everyday Moments.” The second part of the project involved composing music for a series of lifestyle spots.
Back To School at the US Open
Perhaps the most iconic spot for Tina Fey and the American Express Everyday card was the one highlighting the comedian’s back-to-school shopping. Propelled by Storefront’s vintage jazz sound, Fey desperately tries to keep her daughter’s innocence intact by purchasing more conservative fashions. The spot premiered on the US Open telecast.
