The Foo Fighters have announced an eight episode HBO docu-series to premiere on October 17th, coinciding with the eve of the band’s 20th anniversary. Directed by front man and rock icon Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways will chronicle the unusual concept behind the making of the band’s forthcoming eighth album due out this November on Roswell/RCA. Viewers watching the 29th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this weekend on HBO were treated to a surprise first look at the new series – now viewable below and at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-z8A9P5ziA.
Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways is directed by Dave Grohl for Roswell Films, a division of Roswell Records, the label that releases Foo Fighters' music; written by Mark Monroe and Dave Grohl. The series is Executive Produced by Dave Grohl, James A. Rota, and John Ramsay, and produced for HBO by Roswell Films and Therapy Content, in association with Worldwide Pants.
The project continues Therapy’s longstanding relationship with musician-turned-director Dave Grohl. The Santa Monica-based studio headed by EPs John Ramsay and Jim Rota produced Grohl’s feature film debut, with the Grammy-winning 2013 documentary Sound City about the history of the legendary Van Nuys studio of the same name. Dave’s unequaled passion for both the music he creates and the music that inspires its creation once again fuels the type of honest and trusting musician-to-musician exchange that made Sound City a critical and commercial smash. Described by Dave Grohl as “a love letter to the history of American music,” the new series documents the band’s most ambitious effort to date, chronicling their recording odyssey across Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington D.C. and New York.
The series follows the Foo Fighters as they tap into the local history and musical heritage of each city, basing themselves at a legendary studio integral to the unique history and character of each location. One song was recorded in each stop, all featuring local legends sitting in, with every lyric written in an unprecedented experimental style: Dave held off on putting down words until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the experiences, interviews for the HBO series, and other local personalities who became part of the process. Music fans get a front row seat to the process, witnessing the singular regional identity of each city inspire the final album as it is brought to life before us.
Therapy Content is an entertainment development and production company, and sister company to Therapy Studios, a fully integrated post-production house whose unique award-winning work spans commercials, features, music videos and online media.
