When the spot opens viewers may get the impression that the silver haired Senator is preparing to speak at a typical fundraiser. His aide encourages him with the notion that the crowd has “deep pockets”, but the senator is soon urged by the audience to “take it off.”
Hackett says, “We got very lucky with the location as the owner of the club also felt strongly about this issue and was able to work with our incredibly meager budget. It was quite an opulent club, not your typical dingy joint.”
He goes on: “In the spot, I wanted to evoke a certain darkness and unseemly tonality, since this is really representative of the problem. I also wanted to depict the Senator as somewhat of a victim of the system. During his striptease, he appears to be enjoying it, but it’s really more of that fake stripper personae. As soon as it’s over he seems completely depressed.”
A much longer version of the spot was released online in June. It was viewed over 100,000 times, and hundreds of Represent.Us members were moved enough by the video to donate to an ad buy to help welcome Congress back from summer recess.
