Nonfiction Unlimited, a production company specializing in documentary commercials and branded content, has added filmmaker and MTV commercial director E.J. McLeavey-Fisher to their roster of award-winning nonfiction filmmakers.
The signing comes on the heels of McLeavey-Fisher’s five spot campaign for Microsoft’s Outlook.com through MTV. The stylized documentary commercials showcase emerging musical artists Jessie Ware, twenty one pilots, Atlas Genius, Austin Mahone, and Jake Bugg as Outlook.com email helps them stay connected in the midst of their busy lives and touring schedules. The campaign was shot across the US and in London with the director and his crew capturing the personal moments that show each of the artists’ unique personalities.

McLeavey-Fisher also brings his experience as a documentary filmmaker to Nonfiction having directed Stacked. The documentary short follows 20-year-old NY local pro surfer Balaram Stack as he represents his hometown in the Quicksilver Pro Competition challenging Kelly Slater and the world’s best surfers. Stacked is set against the backdrop of Long Beach, NY, as the first-ever East Coast stop for the prestigious competition.
E.J. has been a documentary filmmaker since he moved to NYC to shoot his first film school project: a profile of a rapper selling his CDs on a NYC street corner. From there, he moved to MTV where he became an Emmy-nominated director working with some of music’s biggest names including Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Rihanna, through short and long form documentary content for the channel. Taking his youthful sensibility into the commercial world at MTV, E.J. has directed spots and branded documentary pieces for Burger King, Dove, Kia, ONDCP and the U.S. Army in addition to his campaign for Outlook.com.
“Doc-style is about being inspired by real people and telling their stories,” stated McLeavey-Fisher. “That’s Nonfiction’s philosophy too, and being there means I can share my passion for that work in the commercial world.”
E.J.’s visual style stems from his desire to bring beauty to every story without sacrificing its authenticity or integrity. Often subtle handheld, in-the-moment and always with an eye for grace of each frame. It’s a result of years of shooting his own personal film projects and working closely alongside DPs on his commercial projects. He often opts to shoot second camera himself to achieve a closer connection to the story.
Nonfiction Executive Producer Loretta Jeneski said, “E.J. is all about bringing a youthful visual style to his work. That translates into a modern marriage of commercial and documentary style. We’re delighted E.J. has joined our roster.”
