The Art Directors Guild (ADG) Film Society and the American Cinematheque are co-hosting the annual 2013 Screening Series “Celebrating Extraordinary Production Design,” monthly screenings highlighting the work of renowned Production Designers and their creative collaborations. The series will run from May through August, and the screenings will alternate between the AC’s Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the Egyptian (6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood) and the Max Palevsky Theatre at the Aero (1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica) with all screenings starting at 5:30 pm. The screening series is sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter.

Sunday, May 19, THE X-FILES, (2 episodes) at the Egyptian Theatre, spotlighting the designer / writer / director collaboration in classic series television
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of The X-Files, the ADG Film Society will showcase two notable episodes for their design – “Je Souhaite” (“I Wish”) (2000, Season 7) and “Triangle,” (1998, Season 6). A panel discussion will follow with series Production Designer Corey Kaplan (Scandal, Cold Case, Robbery Homicide Division): Creator-Writer-Producer-Director Chris Carter (The Lone Gunmen, Harsh Realm, Millenium); and Writer-Producer-Director Vince Gilligan (The Lone Gunmen, Harsh Realm; also Creator-Wr-Pr-Dir Breaking Bad); Moderated by Production Designer, John Muto.

TOUCH OF EVIL is a visually arresting film noir masterpiece directed by Orson Welles and starring Welles, Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh and Marlene Dietrich. The program will explore the Universal Studio style during the period of the 1950’s – 60’s and the production artistry and design legacy of the film’s Production Designer and 2013 ADG Hall of Fame Inductee, Robert Clatworthy. Jules Verne’s cinematic steampunk adventure story 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) was the most expensive Hollywood tentpole film of its day. This Academy Award๏ฟฝ winning classic celebrates the remarkable legacy of Production Designer Harper Goff – Artist, Disneyland Theme-park Visionary, Musician, Raconteur, and 2013 ADG Hall of Fame Inductee. Panel discussion with Harrison Ellenshaw, Oscar๏ฟฝ – nominated Visual Effects Supervisor (Tron, The Black Hole, Superman IV) will be moderated by Production Designer, Thomas A. Walsh.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie is anime that is as far from Miyazaki as Hitchcock is from Chaplin. The film has all the emotion and visceral impact of any great live action film, in a story that mixes past and future machinery, architecture, and graphics with urban realism that’s part film noir, part spaghetti western, and part HK actioner. The dazzling Production Design creates an astounding future city combining aspects of Manhattan, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Cairo, and Paris — all set on a terraformed Mars. Panelists will be drawn from the worlds of Production Design, Illustration, and Feature Animation. Moderated by Production Designer, John Muto.
