Director Tony Petrossian wrapped up a successful 2012 by grabbing a top honor from SHOOT Magazine for a commercial featuring digital seagulls performing “I Ran (So Far Away)” – the ubiquitous hit track from Flock of Seagulls. The Petrossian-helmed spot for Cape Cod Potato Chips was named “The 2012 Best of The Best Work You May Never See” and also earned the overall runner-up position for Top FX Spot of the Year – after garnering #1 Top FX Spot of the Summer, months earlier.
“I worked on some great projects in 2012,” notes director Tony Petrossian, who regularly works with top talent and brands around the world. “But it was those four wacky waterfowl that really stole the spotlight. Such divas.”
The Cape Cod Potato Chips spot features an all-bird CG version of iconic 80’s group Flock of Seagulls, performing the band’s biggest hit to the delight of a nearby beach goer while he snacks on the chips. The concept from GKV advertising in Baltimore was shot in Malibu with CG and post work completed at Rhythm +Hues. Petrossian remained actively involved all the way through to the spot’s delivery.
Despite being for a regional brand, hence the ‘best work you may never see’ honor, the commercial was a breakout hit featured in the mainstream media including The New York Times and Forbes. Upon premiering earlier in the year, Petrossian’s “Seagulls” spot also held the coveted “Ad Of The Day” position at Adweek.
The editors at SHOOT nominated 15 commercials for the 2012 “Best Work You May Never See” Award from the over 75 they picked and published during the year. Director Tony Petrossian’s “Seagulls” commercial earned the top spot through a public poll participated in by industry insiders and followed up with a decision by the SHOOT editorial board The SHOOT editors also selected “Seagulls” as the runner up for the Top Special Effects / CGI Commercial of 2012.
Petrossian plans to carry the momentum from last year into 2013. Besides working in the US and across the globe on a slew of new projects, Petrossian is deep into pre-production on a television series he is developing along with several close-to-the-heart PSAs.
