Principal photography has now been completed on some of the first movies to utilize an ARRI Alexa/Codex ARRIRAW workflow, whilst production continues on many others around the world.
One of the first features to shoot ARRIRAW is “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” a Warner Brothers/Paramount production starring Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock and directed by Stephen Daldry, that shot in New York City this spring. Cinematographer Chris Menges, ASC/BSC was impressed by the images produced by the ARRI Alexa camera, whilst 1st Assistant Cameraman Gregor Tavenner (currently working with Robert Richardson, ASC on “World War Z”) and the rest of the camera crew appreciated the ease of use and reliability of the Codex Onboard Recorder and Codex Datapacks.
“It’s not only about ease of use, it’s also about design and reliability. In New York, which suffers weak equipment poorly, the robust build and ergonomic design was and is still preferred,” says Tavenner. “We have carried that same system across the ocean on the war film, World War Z, carrying nine codex on-boards units, with even greater success.
“Since becoming the first company to be certified to record ARRIRAW from the ARRI Alexa camera, we’ve seen an enormous interest in ARRIRAW workflows and are pleased to be working on some of the biggest features of the year with such talented people,” says Sarah Priestnall, Codex’s VP, Market Development, adding, “Codex products are becoming known as the gold standard for high end feature films.”
Other recently wrapped ARRIRAW/Codex productions include Gravity, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Rock of Ages and The Wettest County in the World. Production continues on many other titles such as World War Z, The Avengers and What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Codex is also excited to be involved in the first Codex/Alexa ARRIRAW production in China, The Flying Guillotines.
