Pogo Pictures today announced that up-and-coming comedy director Ben Callner is nominated for a “Young Director Award” at this year’s 2011 Cannes Advertising Festival. Callner is in the running for the award, one of the most anticipated and prestigious at the annual advertising conference, for his work lensing a spec spot called “First Date” for Verizon. The well-received commercial already received accolades at the 2011 AICP Show, winning in the ‘best spec ad’ category.

Ben possesses a knack for finding inherent truths in the most unlikely scenarios, while capturing candid and natural comedic performances. Creating humor that is absurd yet believable, Ben effortlessly balances entertainment with advertising.
Ben’s recent animated PSA for the National Children’s Study has garnered three ADDY awards and a Telly. In 2010 Ben won top prize in the Georgia Lottery’s Super Bowl competition with his afro-wearing talking hamsters spot, in addition to another Telly.
