Collin Cameron and Kevin Moore of Accomplice and Joey Korenman, announce today the launch of Toil, a company dedicated to motion design for all media platforms. Korenman will lead the team as Creative Director with the hope of bringing a new resource to the New England advertising market as a strong visual and conceptual creative partner.
“Our whole philosophy is to let the design drive the execution,” says Korenman. “We work with our roster of designers and artists to develop a strong look or visual language for every project we touch. Any technique we use… 2D, 3D, compositing, is used in the service of the concept and design. Not the other way around. Design comes first."
In order to bring a unique perspective to their clients, Toil partners with designers from around the world; this enables them to bring a fresh look and different spin that is tailored to each concept. In one of their projects, Korenman and Designer-Illustrator Matt Naboshek created an online piece to help launch a new car for 2011. The challenge was to weave together car footage and quotes in an energetic way. Together Toil and the agency collaborated, creating a concept that propels the viewer forward, cruising through footage and type via a 3D animated road. Accomplice edited a fast-paced cut of the running footage as a base for Korenman to work. Toil‘s design incorporated several techniques to achieve an amplified, energetic tone and movement. Utilizing a process called “match-moving” they matched in 3D the actual live action camera move. The animated roads they created in 3D were modeled after and matched the existing road, allowing complete control over the animation. And lastly, a suspension bridge was painted out of two key shots, disintegrating as the car cruises over it.
Also showcased on the Toil web site are an internal project called “Samurai”, designed and illustrated by New York-based Linton Small, and another project on which Korenman collaborated with Director, Ian McFarland, a video for a heavy-metal band from France, Vera Cruz. Korenman sees no boundaries with the ability to tap into new design talent. He explains that designers have varying talents; illustrating, typography, 3D skills, abstract art. Korenman chooses from Toil‘s stable of talent, pulling the right designer for each job. Once the design is complete the Toil team brings it to life. “Discovering new techniques and methods is a big part of the process, says Korenman, “and we love doing it.”
Toil will service clients in the New England area and beyond, weaving artistic visuals through a broad range of branded entertainment.
