The dark dramatic feature Stone, photographed by Dattner Dispoto cinematographer Maryse Alberti, opens Oct. 8 in the United States after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The thriller stars Edward Norton as convicted arsonist Gerald “Stone” Creeson and Robert De Niro as the hardened, emotionally stunted parole officer Jack Maybury. The characters’ dramatic clashes in Jack’s office contrast with a tender relationship developing between Jack and Stone’s wife, Lucetta (Milla Jovovich), who Stone has enlisted to seduce Jack into granting him parole.
From a script by Junebug scribe Angus MacLachlan, the film has received a great deal of attention since the release of its steamy trailer.
Critics have noted both the realist sensibility and observant portraiture Alberti brought to Stone. Variety mentions the director’s astute selection of cinematographer to highlight the internal character study, saying, “Curran augments this inner disturbance by enlisting docu-trained d.p. Maryse Alberti.” Film Freak Central says, “The real stars of the show are Jovovich and the woman photographing her, Maryse Alberti.”
Shot on Kodak stocks 5217 and 5219, Alberti used Panavision camera and lenses to create the mood of the film.
Alberti is a multi award-winning cinematographer and photographic artist who originally hails from France. Her recent credits include the box office hit The Wrestler, winner of the Indie Spirit Best Cinematography Award, and We Don’t Live Here Anymore, nominated for the same honor.
Her body of work includes standout cinematography for director Todd Haynes on Poison and Velvet Goldmine, for which Alberti won her first Indie Spirit Award for Best Cinematography. Alberti also lensed the hard-hitting drama Happiness for indie provocateur Todd Solondz.
