With a mission to discover top emerging artists looking to make their industry mark, and following on the heels of the 8th Annual SHOOT New Directors Showcase Screening Event, which played to a packed house at the DGA Theatre in NYC Tuesday Night, the editors of SHOOT Magazine, the leading publication for commercial and entertainment production, announced today the release of The SHOOT New Directors Showcase Web Reel featuring work from 39 directors who made the final cut, after a global search for months, to be included in this year’s Showcase. The 39 directors fill 32 Showcase slots–26 individual directors, five duos, and a helming trio.
The directors come from a great variety of backgrounds including unaffiliated newcomers, several with ad agency pedigrees–including one who’s still on the agency side–and even a helmer whose directorial debut earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary. Many of the directors appeared at the Showcase event, with six participating in a panel discussion during which they related their backstories and strategies for breaking into the directorial ranks. Also on the panel providing production house and ad agency perspectives on the marketplace for new directing talent were, respectively, Bonnie Goldfarb, co-founder/executive producer of harvest, and Lora Schulson, executive director of content production at Young & Rubicam, New York. The work entered in this year’s New Directors search conducted from January to early April included documentaries, features, commercials, alternative media content, music videos, shorts and spec work. From laughter to tears, drama to horror, spots to movie excerpts, dialogue driven to visual effects fantasy–that’s just a sampling of the range of emotions, genres, mediums and styles on these year’s SHOOT New Directors Showcase Reel.

About The New Directors Search / The New Directors Showcase Reel
Each year SHOOT conducts a worldwide search to discover the best up-and-coming directors who, based on their initial work, show promise to soon make major positive contributions to advertising and/or entertainment in its traditional and emerging forms. The search is conducted by SHOOT’s editorial staff with input from advertising agency creative directors & heads of production, as well as production company heads and established directors. This year’s search was conducted from January 1-April 5th, 2010. Over the years, there have been assorted cases of New Directors Showcase helmers going on to gain industry prominence. Consider David Gray who was in the 2005 Showcase and a year later went on to be nominated for the DGA Award as best commercial director of the year. (Gray was at Hungry Man when included in the ’05 Showcase and has since moved over to Station Film). And last month Ross Katz won the DGA Award for outstanding achievement in movies for TV/miniseries on the strength of his HBO film Taking Chance, the same film which garnered him inclusion in SHOOT’s ’08 New Directors Showcase. (Katz is available for select spot assignments via TWC.)
To enter the search, a director must be directing traditional broadcast TV commercials less than 2 years (less than 3 years if work has been regional). Directors enter search via offical submission containing “VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE: “Please do NOT enter if you do not fit the criteria!! It’s inevitably discovered if a director has been directing commercials longer than the entry criteria. Disregarding the entry rules is embarrassing for the director and not fair to those who qualify. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in providing this great opportunity to those who fit the entry criteria”. Whether it’s the director him/herself entering or a production executive on the director’s behalf, whoever submits the form, signs the form certifying information submitted is accurate. Submission forms for the 2011 SHOOT 9th Annual New Directors Search will be available on SHOOTonline in late December 2010.
